People are crying "freedom of the press", but I think I'm okay with this.

Yeah, the whole point of the trial is that the press broke their own rules and were being vindictive. They were making the news rather than just reporting it.

Apparently Florida has pretty restrictive laws on privacy of non-news interest items, and lost due to this.

One thing I was curious about is all the new laws against videotaping someone without knowledge and then posting it on the internet. (Or gaining access to videotapes they might have known about, but again publishing it without their knowledge.)

Why is it illegal for citizens, but legal for "news" outlets?

Same weird line that exists for prostitution and porn. Paying for sex is illegal unless you're filming it...

News worthy overrides right to privacy? I dunno.

I think typically if it happens on public property anyone can film and publish it but if it's on private property then you'll need permissions or face potential lawsuits.

And would anyone really consider Gawker to be "the press"? Come on.

Goodbye Gawker. You won't be missed.

IMHO, this is good riddance. As others have pointed out, this site was about exposing people's secrets for profit, consequences be damned. They exposed gay men who weren't out, Hogan's sex tape, and published a list of NY gun owners' personal information because Gawker was anti-gun.

That's actually a huge win for ethics in journalism.
