LOST question

The other night I noticed my DVR kicked off with 30 seconds or so to go in the show. I reprogrammed it to record an extra minute each week, because Lost has done that before.Yeah I recorded LOST and for some reason the last minute got cut off. Jack is asking the female cop about killing one of the Others then it cuts out. What happened after that? Anyone help a brother out.
Jack asks Anna Lucia if it was true that she had killed one of the Others. She said she did.
She tells him she's a cop.
Then Jack asks how long it would take Anna to train an army.
Evidently Jack has plans to train and arm his people. To me it sounded like he wants on going on the offensive.
My question is this:
The Gorton's Fisherman told Jack's group that Michael would never find them.
If that's true, then what were the gunshots that Jack's party chased?
Three shots were Michael's, and the other four (or so)? If they weren't going to let Michael find them, then whom was shooting at whom?

I found the whole "asking the cop to train an army" thing rather stupid as well.
Has anyone noticed, or is it just me, that they have softened Locke up a bit and made Jack more of a prick?
Also did anyone else notice that the crusty Other didn't know Sawyer's name, or at least, didn't say it? I wonder if that had something to do with Locke's discovery that Sawyer wasn't his name. Although, the "Goodnight James" at the end was pretty funny.

“Activism is a way for useless people to feel important, even if the consequences of their activism are counterproductive for those they claim to be helping and damaging to the fabric of society as a whole.” - Dr Thomas Sowell
Locke had this whole "the island is teaching me" theory. He expected that the hatch was going to be a transfiguration event.
Now he's gone from great white hunter to button pusher, much like his old job.
That's probably taken some of the wind out of his sails.
Locke's a defensive guy at times. Yeah, he went after people when he had to. But he also KO'd Sayid and smashed the receiver so they couldn't find the source of the recording.
