Re: Mad Max

I know at least one other forum dweller has this game, and I've been playing through it recently.

Mad Max is an open world game in the same vein as Grand Theft Auto. You play as Max, and right out of the gate you're toe to toe with the big bad. Stuff happens and you're starting over, but not...? I don't know, the time line is really odd. Just know that you're Mad Max, you drive cars and kick ass, and the world is a shit hole.

The driving feels good. Different cars and upgrades give different feels as they should. One moment you'll feel like you're driving a vehicle that responds as is the Earth itself obeys your will, and then you'll switch to a new car and feel like you're driving a fully loaded full truck on ice. I know that sounds bad, but it works. You can equip your vehicle with a couple of weapons too, only one of which feels weaker than I believe it should. The harpoon is an amazingly fun addition.

The hand to hand combat is also very satisfying, and I recommend a control with a vibration function. You'll know when you're in Fury mode (Max is pissed and does more damage), when you're killing folks, when you take damage, etc. The only weakness of hand to hand is countering. The fighting here resembles the Batman series, but the counters aren't as quick. You will get hit in fights, which is both cool in its realism, but dumb considering it's clear that wasn't the intent.

The only guns in the game are your sawed off shotgun and a massive sniper rifle you can only use from your car. There are melee weapons, but you only find them in combat, they break REALLY fast, and they're not as fun as fists.

I'm honestly only halfway through the story currently, but so far it's exactly what you'd expect from a game of this type and the setting. Nobody trusts anyone, but they need stuff done. There are side missions too that reward you with equipment.

There's also an RPG-like system of leveling up your character, equipment, and cars that are achieved by getting to certain goals, money, completing certain missions, etc. Here's where I have a problem with the game. Without realizing it, I had cleared out almost all objectives/side missions in the southern part of the map, completely finished advancing my character via points earned through tasks, unlocked just about everything there was to unlock in the cars area, and completely unlocked all equipment when I realized I had only gotten about 3 missions into the game's main story. The 4th took me into an advanced area of the game where I would have been toast by every wandering patrol (there are a lot) without all those upgrades. Now maybe the game scales to your level? If so, I apologize, but if not, this part of the game, let's call it "pacing", sucks. They should have more missions unlocked in the southern/easier region before sending players up north.

Anyway, there are a bunch of side stuff to do like finding and exploring various camps, disabling minefields (The dumbest part of the game, it's just a time waster, but necessary to "liberate" areas. Thankfully, there's only 1-2 minefields per area with 3-4 mines a piece.), ramps, races, convoys (One of the best parts of the game. Track down a convoy and kill them all.), etc.

If you enjoyed Fury Road and GTA games, this is a must. Pick it up once it hits $5-$10 on Steam and you'll be getting hours upon hours of game play for a great price.

I'll chime back in once I have completed the game.
