Hmmm... this might have happened because the government of Zimbabwe doesn't really give a shit.
"What lion?" acting information minister Prisca Mupfumira asked in response to a request for comment about Cecil, who was at that moment topping global news bulletins and generating reams of abuse for his killer on websites in the United States and Europe.

The media is engaging in misdirection again and folks are lapping it up. THAT is why Trump is popular. He refuses to play their game.

"Why are the Americans more concerned than us?" said Joseph Mabuwa, a 33-year-old father-of-two cleaning his car in the center of the capital. "We never hear them speak out when villagers are killed by lions and elephants in Hwange."

A) You have guns, lions don't.
B) Your habitat has expanded a shitload over the past few hundred years. The lion habitat has dropped exponentially.
C) Let's check the number of people killed by big fauna in Africa versus the flip side. Now, let's take into account how many people probably decided to get a fucking selfie with some huge beast or something equally stupid. There is no animal in the world that makes a regular meal of humans. Occasionally, individual members of a species will, but usually because they're sick or disabled and can't hunt the normal prey.
D) Zimbabwe has one of the most corrupt governments in modern history. If it's not directly handing them money or guns, they don't know what something is. They treat their elephant population like an ivory farm so they can finance their despotic regime under the thin veil of democracy. Mugabe is a mass-murdering dictator that stays in power by silencing and killing his opposition.
In fact, Bloomberg reports, Zimbabwe requested in July 2014 to reverse the U.S. import ban on its ivory and continues to promote an elephant-hunting industry that generates $14 million a year and that it says is necessary to upkeep nature reserves and control the population. But Hwange National Park, where about half of the country’s elephants live (and which Cecil called home for 13 years) was the site of what the Telegraph called “the worst single massacre in southern African for 25 years” in 2013, when hunters after elephant tusks — a set of which can fetch up to $16,000 on the black market across the border in South Africa — poisoned watering holes with cyanide, killing as many as 300 elephants, many with their calves by their sides.

The great white hunter is ducking all attempts to contact him, even from US gov't offices. Estimates say Cecil generated $100k per year in tourism.

He generated over $50k in just two days. Beat his own previous record and went out on a win!

And that's not counting all the donations to the park that his death has generated.

Humans are a dime a dozen and growing in number daily. There's a lot fewer lions. Even fewer that get along with humans.

And to be fair, I typically don't get worked up over any sort of hunting. I defend hunting. I'm been hunting, and yes, I've killed.

This hunt, however, was the act of criminals and cowards. There was nothing "ballsy" about luring an animal off protected lands, injuring it, letting it slowly bleed out for 40 hours, and then finally killing it. I'd feel that way if it was a deer, let alone a lion. These assholes knew exactly what they were doing.

I have a personal bias against the killing of any endangered animal. I think if you hunt tigers, lions, elephants, rhinos, etc. then you're an asshole. Especially if you're hunting them from cars, luring what is basically a domesticated animal, and other bullshit. There's no sport in that, you're just killing something because your dick is small.

I harbor the same disgust for Asian people who need to murder tigers, sharks, etc. because they can't get their dicks hard.

Any hunter worth a damn has a love and respect for nature. Nothing about this kill respected the animal. Fuck this guy and everyone that was with him.

The more this story goes on the more I seriously don't care. I don't wish to see lions extinct, but if they disappear it will not impact my day to day life at all. There's a lot of shit happening right now that will impact our lives potentially for the rest of our lives, and your children's lives. This isn't one of them. It's all bread and circuses.

You are aware that all the new painkillers which aren't opiate-based have been derived from an animal, right? Along with a shitload of other medicine. You never know when a live lion might be useful to science. And since we haven't figured out how to make them yet...
You want a miracle? *You* make a fish from scratch. You can't. You think only God can make a tree? Try coming up with a mackerel. And when the last one's gone, that'll be that.

Zimbabwe not happy.
The American dentist who killed Cecil the lion was a "foreign poacher" who paid for an illegal hunt and he should be extradited to Zimbabwe to face justice, environment minister Oppah Muchinguri said on Friday.

In Harare's first official comments since Cecil's killing grabbed world headlines this week, Muchinguri said the Prosecutor General had already started the process to have 55-year-old Walter Palmer extradited from the United States.

Sounds like they give a fuck now.

I'm betting the park would like their $100K/year and their iconic attraction back.

Asshole's being ostracized from the hunting community.
Safari Club International responded by suspending both Walter Palmer's and his guide's memberships, stating that "those who intentionally take wildlife illegally should be prosecuted and punished to the maximum extent allowed by law."

Asshole still won't admit he's a poacher.
"The media interest in this matter — along with a substantial number of comments and calls from people who are angered by this situation and by the practice of hunting in general — has disrupted our business and our ability to see our patients," Palmer wrote.

Yeah, Walt, they're mad about hunting in general, you fucking cunt.
Palmer, said to be capable of skewering a playing card from 100 yards with his compound bow, has cultivated a purist’s reputation for his disinclination to carry firearms as backup. Learning to shoot at age 5, he has <s>slain</s> poached all but one of the animals recognized by Pope and Young.

Fixed. His aim sucks so hard, it took him 40 hours to land a kill shot. By the by...
To gain inclusion, archers must adhere to an ethical code known as Fair Chase, which bans the use of power vehicles, spotlights and other modern contrivances.

I wonder if a jeep counts as a "modern contrivance."

Numbers.
A century ago, an estimated 200,000 lions roamed across Africa, according to National Geographic. Today there are fewer than 30,000.

Human population of Africa about 1900: ~133 million
Human population of Africa now: 1.1 billion

One species is clearly winning. If big game wasn't poached to extinction over there, losing the odd varmint wouldn't matter much. But they are.
Twenty-five years ago South Sudan’s elephant population was 130,000. Today there are only 5,000 left.

That's why when you go to hunt that shit today, you check every motherfucking detail ten times over precisely so you don't cause an international incident. I know you might enjoy hunting and shooting with guns or bows and whatnot. Fine. For fuck's sake, though, can't you find a species we're not already unceremoniously bouncing out of existence like a group of dumb-ass frat boys? I don't want nature to get to the point where it has as much variety as your average radio station.

[url=http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldne ... t-find-one

-big-enough.html]Most incompetent[/url] hunting guide in the world hired. You'd think such an "experienced" type of guy like Walt would have put two and two together.
We set off quite late, with the sun down, and found the carcass of an elephant which we dragged and moved into the long grass and used for bait,” he said. “We then established the ‘tree blind’ [a camouflaged hide made of tree branches and grass].
...
“The client then fired using a bow and arrow, and it went away into the long grass. This was about 10 pm.”
...
“We got there about 9am, and we found it and it was wounded, and the client then shot it, with his bow and arrow, and killed it.”
It was then the hunters went over to it, and saw it had a collar.

Ah well, protected and collared lions wandering into your hunting area? Wow, what are the odds?
The land on which Cecil was shot was a farm called Antoinette, which borders Hwange national park. It is currently occupied by Honest Ndlovu – who appeared in court alongside Mr Bronkhorst on Wednesday, but has not been charged with illegal hunting.

Let's get this straight:
“When Dr Palmer arrived in Bulawayo, his luggage was missing and I was dashing around looking for it. So we were late getting ready to go,” he said.
“And we were never meant to hunt on the land where this lion was shot. At the last minute I had to divert from a concession [hunting area] about eight miles away.”

You had a late start to your day and decided to half-ass the necessary preparations and sanity checks. You then hunted on land directly adjacent to a protected wildlife reserve, home to the sorts of species you're interested in bagging. You effectively chum the Savannah, hoping to find something. You stay out until visibility is shitty. You decide, "Eh, what the fuck," and shoot anyhow, in spite of the fact that if you don't one-hit it, you aren't getting another chance until daylight. Then, instead of IMMEDIATELY reporting your colossal fuck up, you compound it.
“I should have taken it to Parks [the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlfe Management Authority], I admit that. So we did what had to be done. We took the head and skin, as the client had paid for the trophy.

There's no way in hell some voice inside Walt's headed wasn't going, "Hey, this is, uh, kind of shady." If this is what this asshole considers "hunting," he shouldn't be allowed a license for the rest of his life. Both these fuckers, even after they knew for a stone cold fact that they'd killed something off limits, just kept right on going along because someone forked out $50K, goddamnit, and they WILL get their fucking trophy.

Another?
Zimbabwe's National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority accused Jan Casimir Seski of Murrysville, Pennsylvania, of shooting the lion with a bow and arrow in April near Hwange National Park, without approval, on land where it was not allowed, according to The Associated Press.

Personally I'm okay with anything being huntable in the wild, but the balance of power should be tipped against the hunter the more endangered the species is. At the lion's level of endangered it should be a hunting knife and basic clothing. If you want to hunt a white rhino you have to so do naked and with no weapons.

Good luck!

Not enough. Hunting endangered or near endangered species means that dudes with guns are out hunting you during that time as well.
