In 2008, Palmer pleaded guilty to making false statements to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service about a black bear he shot and killed in Wisconsin outside of an authorized hunting zone, according to court documents.

Ah, not just poaching but lying about poaching.

Palmer responded later Tuesday, saying in a statement that he "deeply" regretted the pursuit of the early July hunt in Zimbabwe that "resulted in the taking of this lion." He added that he "had no idea" Cecil the lion was a "known, local favorite, was collared and part of a study. I hired several professional guides and they secured all proper permits. To my knowledge, everything about this trip was legal and properly handled and conducted."

Though Palmer said in his Tuesday statement that he had "not been contacted by authorities in Zimbabwe or in the U.S. about this situation," the Associated Press reported that Zimbabwe police said they were looking for Palmer, who is facing poaching charges.

Fucking liar.

"I hope your patients abandoned you and that you are never able to earn a living again so that you can no longer bankroll your lust for killing," a user by the name of Mike C. wrote on the page.

That's a bit extreme, but he deserves every bit of negative backlash he gets, both personally and professionally.

While I don't agree with how his guide went about this hunt, I was impressed that he was bow hunting a lion. Ethics of the manner of this hunt aside, that's pretty ballsy.

Shit, let me see you kill an alpha predator with a bow and arrow. I'm not talking about his hunting methods. Predator hunters are killed or injured more often than you'd think. Even in Africa where they have guides covering for them.

Cecil was allegedly lured off the protected park site, wounded with a bow and arrow, stalked for 40 hours, and then finally shot.

He lured a solo lion out of a protected wildlife reserve to kill it in a half-assed manner. He didn't kill it with a bow. He got one arrow in, let it wander around in pain for almost two full days, then finally killed it with a gun. Hell, if he'd even gone out to the bush to look for one, I might give him something. As it is, this asshole walked into a zoo with no walls.

Most hunters can take a shot at 40-60 yards depending on the hunter and their gear. If your hunt is ethical or unethical, a wild lion 50 yards away with nothing in between you and it is the same level of dangerous.

I remember seeing one big game hunter had a large cat (forget what he was hunting) on him before his guides could get a bead on him. If I recall, he took a bullet from one of the guides as they were shooting the cat. He survived, but got pretty messed up.

Just because something's dangerous doesn't mean it's ballsy. The difference between balls and stupidity is context.

Balls = a lion leaps out of nowhere and you let loose with your bow before it charges your jeep.
Stupidity = you charter one of the most outrageously illegal hunting expeditions possible and do zero homework, taking over a day and a half to make the "kill."

Lions are one step above "endangered." It is kind of important not to kill them all so they don't end up like this species, which is extinct once the four remaining sterile members die off. Some people have to be reminded that just because you can be a dick to nature doesn't mean you should be.
