Welfare in Michigan
Trial program to drug test recipients now approved.
Instead of drug testing, I'd prefer if welfare recipients were tasked to work for the state.
For any day they don't have an interview lined up they have to report to a job office and perform duties.
Even if the jobs are nothing more than trash pickup, we'd still be getting a better investment than higher Maury Povich ratings.

Welfare recipients suspected of using drugs will be offered treatment first. Those who refuse will lose their benefits for six months. Repeat offenders or those refusing to be tested will lose their benefits for six months. Those who test positive for drugs will be referred to a treatment program. If another test shows they are drug free, benefits will be restored.
Sounds like a magnificent way to criminalize more non-violent offenders and toss poor people in jail. I agree, concerning themselves about employment instead of intoxication might help. Cokeheads can get work done pretty quickly.

Holy shit. Let's get a grant and do an experiment. Let's find two parks that are equally messy. We'll release normal folks in one to clean it and in the other we'll have everyone do a line of coke first.
I suspect Michigan's population will drop, ala Wisconsin's, if this becomes standard policy.

I don't give a shit what someone on welfare smokes, drinks, or shoots. Is he moving towards employment?GORDON wrote:I've never bought the "you can't just expect poor people to not do drugs" argument.

After a day of looking for jobs, I'd have no objection to someone hitting a j or two. Stressed people and wasted people interview about the same.

We'll just hire a dude to walk around behind them and hand them cash on demand, then.GORDON wrote:I disagree. If they have cash to buy j's then they are being given too much.

Imagine the damage to the local economy from all those dealers seeing a downturn in profits. You might put them on welfare if they don't get enough sales.

I laid out my welfare plan somewhere..... gigantic, clean housing complex, you are given food that is nutritious and will keep you alive even if it occasionally smells like shit, when in public areas you are in the vision of armed guards to make sure you aren't shitting up the environment for everyone else (looking at you, teenagers), and possibly you are monitored in your apartment, too, to make sure you aren't cooking meth. You are given zero cash. Clean suits and rides to job interviews are always available.
I think if you are on welfare, you should give up a lot of rights because the people feeding you don't want you eating better and smoking more j's than they are.

When Katrina displaced families that have been on welfare for 5 generations straight, it proved the system is broken.
When those same people took their Katrina money and went shopping at expensive stores instead of buying food pr paying rent, it proved that people who don't earn their money have no sense of what it's worth.

The criminal life seems preferable to that.
Attaway to kill the entrepreneurial spirit.
How about a ride to the pub to hang out with the dude interviewing you in a week? Connections are virtually everything, skills count for little.

We'll be sure to put the Welfare Housing near the city center with plenty of walking access to the bars for all your important networking to get you that high paying job.
You still don't get no free money on DTManfare. Go pick aluminum cans out of the trash if you need beer money.

Being poor should suck, and should have you thinking about how to not be poor 16 hours a day. On DTManfare you will be kept off the street, given shelter and food, and all the job training you want. It will not be a party. You will not be given much creature comforts. I am thinking 2 hours of internet time a day to be sending out resumes, if that is your path. No Netflix and no XBoxes.
It is my opinion that most poor people aren't "unlucky," they weren't raised right. As such, on DTManfare you will be treated like a child in order to be taught how to behave like a self-sufficient grownup.

And if you have other problems, such as mental illness, that keep you from leading a normal life, then you get promoted up from DTManfare into a facility that isn't working so hard to punish you. We are a compassionate organization.GORDON wrote:It is my opinion that most poor people aren't "unlucky," they weren't raised right.
