The Dark Knight Returns - Book and Movie

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

I swear to god, this comic should be required reading.

Batman is retired, crime rates grow and grow in Gotham.

Officials blame poverty.

Batman comes out of retirement, starts cleaning up the gangs.

Officials claim all crime is now inspired by/or the result of Batman's interference.

Mayor of Gotham meets with gang leader to declare a truce. Gang leader immediately rips out mayor's throat with his teeth before the first word is said.

New mayor immediately states, "We are still willing to negotiate!"

Batman continuously blamed for the crime, even though Gotham is now the only major city in the country not rioting (due to other plot lines). Batman is now wanted on murder charges.

It was written long before George W, but reads like an extremely prescient roadmap to the world of today. There's even an airliner crashing into a skyscraper.

I swear to god, this comic should be required reading.

Yes, it is quite awesome.

What's next on your reading list?

I read the sequel, "The Dark Knight Strikes Back" right after, but truth be told I went through it so fast nothing much comes back to me... besides the Superman/Wonder Woman sex that caused the tidal wave.

The "shadow government" stuff was interesting, though.

The sequel wasn't as good.

Funny you mention the politics though. I was reading an interview with a comic creator who happens to be helming Batman right now and he said the The Dark Knight Returns is very tough for him to read as a "left wing liberal" (his words). He praised it highly though and said it's one of the all time great stories.

Now whether it was tough to read because it goes against his politics or because it's such a great example of how his politics are wrong...

Or maybe it's tough for him to read because he's borderline illiterate, being a left-wing comic-book writer, and thus completely stupid.

I have no idea who you're attacking there. Everyone?

I think just left-wingers and stupid people, although those groups do have a huge percentage of overlap.

That's what I'm saying:

Comic book writer = probably not very good at anything in school
Left wing = probably not very good at thinking, period
Left-wing comic-book-writer = teh stupid

The sequel wasn't as good.
This one's always been hard for me. I look at it almost the same as people saying Unbreakable wasn't as good as The Sixth Sense. It was a completely different movie, and I think people were expecting almost a sequel to The Sixth Sense (keeping that in mind one could argue the merits of each movie).

Now granted, with The Dark Knight Strikes Back actually being a sequel it's understandable that people would expect it to be more like a sequel, but it was pretty much an entirely different mindset to the writing. Also, I read in a couple of places that Frank Miller was on the verge of being invited to his very own alcohol intervention by his friends and family when he wrote the second one.

No, but it took, like... 15 years for Miller to make the first sequel.

I always liked The Long Halloween.

Now whether it was tough to read because it goes against his politics or because it's such a great example of how his politics are wrong...

I felt that it was more of a comment on right wing politics with the jabs at Regan and Superman.

Frank Miller told Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen) at SDCC that he was welcome to make "The Dark Knight Returns" anytime he wants.

On top of that, rumors are everywhere that things seem to be falling into place perfectly for an adaptation of Miller's work.

I vote for Bruce Campbell to play the older Superman. He'd need to get into shape, which could be played into a storyline on Burn Notice.

Would be kick-ass if not doctored.

Also, how to tie in with existing new Batman story?

They made a 2-part cartoon of this comic, and it is perfect. I watched it over two nights, and then watched it again with the kid over two days. He loved it, too. It is a perfect adaption of the source material. Werf.
