True, but in real life, I know we can stop a corrupt cop. Who knows what happens with an army of these robots if they get hacked.GORDON wrote:Strangely enough, in the movie the military combat version of the robots was still less likely to kill an unarmed civilian than a real life, present day policeman.
Robocop - The Remake
It's not me, it's someone else.
Strangely enough, in the movie the military combat version of the robots was still less likely to kill an unarmed civilian than a real life, present day policeman.
Zing.
Who knows what happens with an army of these robots if they get hacked.
Has anyone done that to a bomb disposal bot yet?

In my experience, cops act like robots anyhow. Bots of flesh and blood, but bots nonetheless. As I've said before, the common sense part of their brain that should be examining the laws and asking, "How the fuck is this making things safer," doesn't seem to kick in.

We don't know because the vast majority of police departments refuse to release data on the number of incidents of police shooting people.Vince wrote:And how often does that happen today by a real life, present day police officer?

Who knows. I will look it up after I plant this gun on this scumbag I just shot, and I know my partner will back me up because he's no rat. I keep a spare gun in the trunk for these occasions.Vince wrote:And how often does that happen today by a real life, present day police officer?GORDON wrote:Strangely enough, in the movie the military combat version of the robots was still less likely to kill an unarmed civilian than a real life, present day policeman.

Probably no worse than Marines in Iraq. Fewer people in Iraq with iPhones to film it as well. Or the RPG takes out the phone itself.GORDON wrote:Who knows. Those children can change direction on a dime.
John Kerry was one of the few in our military that actually stood up and condemned the atrocities our military commit instead of the wall of silence that we usually get from them. But how much good is ONE good soldier out of so many corrupt ones?

Better than zero, unless he doesn't have the balls to do anything.

John Kerry was full of shit and was a politician from the beginning. His stories about the atrocities that were seared... SEARED... into his brain, that he made up, were 100% intended to help his personal career.
You aren't the first person on this thread to try to get my goat by saying "yeah but military suck too so your argument is invalid."
1. I never said the military was 100% full of honest angels.
2. The military and the civilian police are nearly opposites in respect to their missions, so I don't even see how this is a valid comparison to begin with.
3. But if we want to compare, anyway, I honestly believe, overall, Marines and soldiers in combat zones break far, FAR fewer laws every day than does the civilian police force.
4. The police are supposed to work with the "public trust," which almost all abuse, all the time, even if it is just speeding when they don't have to, because they know nobody will do shit about it. (Wife's cop friend used to brag about flashing the badge to get out of speeding tickets)
Everybody should strive to be a good citizen, imo, but I don't know how I can possibly, legitimately be criticized because I think the police should be good citizens, squared. They should be the ideal. They should be the heroes that they think they are. They shouldn't be the pieces of shit I have personally encountered (not all of them, but enough). And I am not even talking about even my wife's self-entitled cop friend, she's a cool person, otherwise.
I admit it, I don't like cops. But I used to. Hard experience and open eyes changed my mind.
Stay out of the bad cop thread if you don't want to read about cops beating up and killing people over nothing. Start a good cop thread. Start a "military people are shit" thread. I won't ever try to deny that some of them are.

Actually I do avoid the bad cop threat at this point. I wasn't the one that had to inject this crap into a movie thread.GORDON wrote:Stay out of the bad cop thread if you don't want to read about cops beating up and killing people over nothing. And I just realized this is why I am on movie's side of, "Let the robots patrol." The robots aren't going to power trip you, they will do what they are programmed to do. They will be polite to a fault, they will never get angry or flustered, and they will never feel the need to be a bully to show the next robot over that they aint no pussy. There's no fear nor adrenaline anywhere in the equation to cause even honest, human mistakes. Cops don't give a shit about getting home alive.
I like that cop at the beginning of the first JJTrek movie, on the hoverbike. He is chasing James Tiberius Kirk, telling him to "Pull over, citizen." Kirk hauls ass, nearly killing himself in the quarry. Cop aint mad, he just asks, "Citizen, what is your name." No baton comes out, there's no tasing, there's no retribution for not doing what he was told. All cops should be like that. Instead they are writing you tickets for local revenue generation, failing to keep your house from getting robbed, telling you they don't care that you know where your stolen phone is because of the GPS tracker, and telling you you'll never see your car again when it is stolen because they just don't have time.
I think the biggest joke of this movie was that Sam Jackson was obviously supposed to be some Bill O'Reilly/Fox News caricature, but he ended up being right about everything he said.
This is a video of a perfect, real-world cop. I like him.
And I was going to post the vid of the cop beating the shit out of a woman on the side of a road because she didn't know he wanted her to pull over for a mile, but couldn't find it. Instead here's the 8 million video hit from googling "youtube bad cop."

I do have to pint this one out. I am not for police driving unsafe speeds because they can. I am not for police flashing their lights to get through a red light just because they don't want to wait. However I understand police on the highway or Interstate going 10 miles or so over the speed limit. If you ever come up on a cop on the Interstate that's going the speed limit, you'll see why. It looks like he's leading a two mile long parade because no one will pass him. It creates a huge bottleneck on the highway.GORDON wrote:4. Sure. I get that. I am not an absolutist.
And I don't need for my friends to have the exact same opinions of me, just to let you know I am not mad for people arguing about this topic. As I said, I know I don't like cops and have a bias.
And Leisher, no offense to your Dad. You said once that he quit because of the politics and shit like this, so he was obviously not part of the problem.

To which I would say that is overwhelming proof that the set speed limits are horseshit and good public servants who actually gave a shit about serving the public would work to have those limits set correctly.
But that's more about how much politicians suck than the cops do.
