Olympus has Fallen - Yay! Netflix.

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

President Harvey Dent is taken hostage when Koreans attack the White House. Little do the Koreans know that King Leonidas is going to open a can of whoop ass on them.

Another way to put this would be: Die Hard in the White House.

A very entertaining popcorn film with some solid patriotism to give it an added kick.

The only problem, and really something Hollywood never gets right, is that it couldn't happen. At least, not the way they depict in the film. While inventive, the actual method of takeover is really, really stupid when you consider it involves the defenders not reacting at all or using any of their training. You have to really concentrate on ignoring the absurdity of it all, but if you do, the film is entertaining and fun.

1. In spite of the fact I too had some problems with it, this is a good movie.

spoilers follow

2. No way it would have gone down like that. As soon as the President is compromised as a hostage, he aint President no more, the end. The new President would have immediately started sending battalion after battalion of Marines into the White House in order to stop the damage they were obviously trying to cause..... none of that "we can't do what we have to do because they have hostages including the president!" stuff.

3. By the time the hydra came out on the roof there must have been about 50 weapon systems targeted onto the bad guys on the roof. Any of them should have been able to take it out.

I pretty much didn't like it from the wife's death on.

Spoilers

An unidentified plane isn't challenged until it's 5 minutes from the White House?
Secret service shoots like stormtroopers. NK's shoot like commandos.
Secret service is IN the White House and being taken out like fish in a barrel. Fighting on their own home court and getting owned?
The traitor guy is all about selling us out. Then, gets stabbed by his friend and is immediately changed back?
Garbage trucks are commandeered long enough to install explosives and machine guns mounted, and when some pull up in front of the WH, they are just looked at like "What are those silly guys doing here?"
WH lawn is getting shredded by garbage truck machine guns. Secret service EXITS the building into the wide open front yard. It isn't until there are three left, two of which are already shot that they decide to stop pouring out like ants.
Sniping with a pistol, using your off arm to hold your gun steady. Dirk Diggler style. Only thing missing was the lit cigarette.
Agent has been out of the Secret Service for months, but all of his codes are still active. Even his "Lock out super hacker chick from the system she hacked into" codes. Don't they change the passwords when people leave?
"The Hydra's online. It's going to kill the helicopters." "No it won't, my guys will take it out" Proceed to NOT tell the helicopter guys it's there. Let them figure it out themselves after it shoots two of them down. And why the hell weren't we using it on the plane that was shooting all of DC? Fire two anti air and call it quits?
"Mustang, this is Big Top. Bringing out the full package."
Give up the secret codes faster much?
Announce to the world that the pres is dead when really, you have no idea? The bad guys said he was on that chopper, so, I guess he must have been.
Negotiate with terrorists more, please. Thank you.

My list would go on, but, you get the point. The entire time I was watching it, I was getting pissed at how incompetent they were making us look. I would have given MUCH of this a pass had they infiltrated the bunker with bad guys, but NOT taken the house. All the secret service, plus stationed marines could have held them off. There are a lot of halls and corridors to fight in. But no, let's all go out onto the front lawn for the easy slaughter fest. Just dumb. The attack on the house should have ended as being a tactic to drive them underground. Super hacker chick locking the system down. Etc. But then, I guess you don't have a Die Hard reboot if you do that.

Was in DC last month. It was impossible not to notice how many guns are present around the Whitehouse. Just a massive amount of armed people. Secret Service, DC cops, National Park cops. Hard to imagine much happening like anything described in this movie.

Like Cake says, the list could have gone on and on. It was just absurd.

Is it possible to have a movie like this where you don't have to turn your brain off?

It was fun if you ignore all the obvious flaws. Since I was watching it while working out, action was basically all I needed.

You guys didn't miss the story about the guy making deep into the first floor of the White House a few weeks ago and knocking the crap out of a woman agent and kicking their killer guard dog and making him cry and run like a girl?

Haven't seen this movie, but just wanted to point out that the actual news scenario was pretty unbelievable when it happened, too. Probably not as well planned as the one in the movie though :-)

As soon as I saw someone posted in this thread, I knew that would be the post.

Yeah, it looks like the Secret Service isn't really the best of the best of the best we were all led to believe at the time we watched the movie.

I don't think they're trying as hard with Obama... :D

The reality of any situation is that there will be moments when the guard is down. This is especially true when the president isn't there. Plus, when you're geared up to stop an armed force, you sometimes miss a lone intruder.

In the case of the movie, POTUS is at home, his kid is home, and there's a visiting world leader. Nobody is taking that house.

On top of the massive force that would be there and wouldn't run out of a single door to be picked off easily, there are also security measures we don't even know about. Things that don't get used on a solo intruder when POTUS isn't home.

I liked how King Leonidas ran through the building stabbing people in the face and never once stopped to talk about his feelings.

There's a scene late in that film where he's on the stairs near the lobby and just straight up murdering punk asses by stabbing them in the skull and shooting them in the face at point blank range. That shit gave me a murder boner.

Even when he called his wife, he just kinda played it off.

Although, as to why he would do that when he only has 5 minutes to save the United States... well, back to Cake's post.
