The latest installment of what is apparently becoming a series.
This time Spidey has to face off with Venom and his attempt to turn everyone in New York into a Symbiote.
If you've played previous Spidey games, then you know what to expect here with the following exception:
-This game gets webslinging. It has never been better.
-The fighting is also much better. My only complaint is once Spidey gets a combo going, you can't stop it, leaving him vulnerable sometimes.
-A few good cameos including Wolverine, Luke Cage, and Moonknight.
-Switch between the black and red suits with the push of a button from the game's opening. This gives you different fighting styles.
The rest of the game plays out like the other console Spider-Man games.
There are some complaints though...
The voiceacting is superb throughout the game, particularly Wolverine. However, there is one voice that is so badly miscast that it ruins every cut scene it appears in, and that voice is Spider-Man. His voice is terrible to the point that I'm willing to call it the worst voiceover in history. Hey developers, this isn't the Ultimate universe where Spidey is 16, this is the 616 where he's in his 20s.
The camera has a bug. If you've climbing a building, upon reaching the top, the camera will sometimes continue to "look down" at you like you're still on the building. That means you can't see anything on the roof, and if there are bad guys... To fix it, you need to jump and webswing, sometimes off the building you climbed. Not a game killer, but annoying.
Things get repetitive. Throughout the game, swinging around as spidey never got boring. It just feels so natural and is so much fun. the combat, however, got boring. There just aren't many different villains. You fight gangs in the training missions, then kingpin troopers, then symbiotes. That's it. Even the boss battles are few and far between as the only baddies around are Vulture and Electro. You don't even really get a true shot at Venom who is the game's main villain. How dumb is that?
However, in the boss battles, Wolverine shines again. (They should've made this a Wolverine game.) When you first encounter him, in comic book tradition, the heroes must fight before working together. This fight was the toughest fight in the game and the most interesting as he'd ask Spidey questions from their history to confirm his identity that you had to answer.
The game is also pretty short as I think I just got it two weekends ago and did NOT play it every night. Of course, I only played through it as the good spidey. I got enough of the emo shit in Spider-Man 3.
My last complaint would be their contradiction from the story and the suits. In the story, if you're trying to be good red and blue Spidey, then you want to avoid the black suit, however many enemies are defeated easily with the black suit while the red and blue Spidey barely dents them.
Overall, it's a good game and lots of fun swinging around the city. I think it's a better rental though.
6 out of 10.
