I still say that a "Space Seed"/Khan in this new universe is the best way to go, with Khan actually taking over whatever starship finds him, since Kirk wasn't there to defeat him. Then he starts conquering Federation planets, one by one....

The villain has been cast.
Is that Khan or someone else?

GI Joe 2 got the 2012 date.
Maybe I should see GI Joe 1 someday.

The worst part is that G.I. Joe 2 appears like it should be subtitled: "We killed the entire cast because we don't have much faith in this film or because Bruce Willis cost that much money..."
Back to Star Trek news:
Peter Weller is in the film. Del Toro will not be Khan.
That was as of Dec 5th, 2011...
Del Toro out. Some other dude is now the villain, and some Dr. Who guy is in too.
Rumors still claim Khan will be the villain, but the producers deny it.

You know, I would not discount Montalban's performance as a reason why Del Toro would drop out. And I mean out of respect, not fear...but maybe a little fear...
Khan is a classic villain, not just in the Star Trek universe, but in movie history. It's one of those roles that was cast perfectly. Those are some big ass shoes to fill, and I guarantee you that a lot of actors would go over the top trying to compete with Montalban's performance.

I agree that he's an odd choice. Del Toro should have played this role.

Cowriter Damon Lindelof explains how the production design is even more impressive this time around:
"It was incredible, and I think that Trek 2 — there's certainly an instinct to just go bigger in the second movie and one of the things that we did was we connected all the sets, so you can just basically follow the actors off the bridge, into a turbo lift, down, walking through a plaza, into the med bay as opposed to [having to] cut every time you do that, because when we were shooting on the Paramount stages we just didn't have the money to connect all the sets. So the first day that I actually walked on the Enterprise, you walked through the Enterprise and it's a very insular experience of like, ‘Wow I'm actually on a starcraft.'"
He also offers plenty of praise for the cast:
"And then when you see all the actors again, and Kirk in his yellow — which we only really see at the very, very end of the first movie — and start playing those interactions between he and Bones, he and Scotty, Spock and Bones, etc. And then bringing in some new blood, Alice Eve is awesome. Benedict Cumberbatch, I can already say with a certain degree of confidence that he is gonna give an iconic film performance and one of the best sci-fi performances that I've ever seen. And not even having seen the movie yet, just sitting there in video village with the headphones on. So I'm really psyched."

Tribbles!!!
Ok, maybe not in the movie, but interesting to see them state that the comics are canon.
