This was on cable today while I was on my death bed (influenza or something), and I realized that the only reason this movie was rated R was because of the numerous F-Bombs. Bold move. Seems like today a movie like that would cut the f-bombs by the New Yorkers... and thus the realism... for the sake of a PG. Not even a PG-13... without the cursing, there's no reason to not give it a PG.
Kudos to whomever made that call.

Another thought:
Alabama had these kids on a murder beef. They had witnesses, and they were itching to do more death penalty. Everyone knew they did it. The officials were cocky about their slam dunk, during the trial.
It wasn't until the last 10 minutes that two geniuses figured it out and kept those kids from getting murdered by the state.
This is why I'm anti-death penalty, and not super keen on life sentences in general, without more evidence than "take my word for it, I saw it." Because most people don't get a couple Sherlock Holmes-level geniuses assigned to help them.

Geniuses or people who just happened to subject matter experts?
Well, it's a movie and "take my word for it, I saw it" is usually not enough to get a conviction in real life.
Not the thread for this discussion, but I agree with you if we're talking first time offenders...to a point, of course. Many serial killers are first time offenders. Although, I'm against outright executing them. Not because I think they deserve leniency, but because we shouldn't waste the opportunity to study them to try and prevent others. Plus, they usually have information about more victims, bodies, etc. that they may not part with until years later.
