TV - Big Love

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

This is an interesting new show on HBO. Now I must admit a bias for HBO shows. There has been Sopranos and most recently shows like Rome and Entourage which I have thoroughly enjoyed.

Big Love stars Bil Paxson as a man with three wives who live in three separate house all right next to each other. (All three houses share one big back yard) From the front all seems normal. The famlies make great efforts not to let on that they are all together.

Though they don't come right and say it you get the impression that they are in Utah and are an offshoot of Mormons. You are also introduced to Bill Paxson's parents who live on a compound where polygamy is practiced and everything is ruled by a man they call the Prophet.
Only one show has been on so far but it was both funny and engaging. I look forward to more episodes.

Until then I will give it a tentative rating of 6/10

I'm not sure about the show, yet...

Now, I consider myself open minded when it comes to peoples' private lives, but I find Paxton's marriage to 3 women (2 of which, so far, are very needy) very, very sick. All I can think is that he married one of them.... then he felt like he needed another wife nagging at him? And then another? It's like he's a severe masochist with a mental illness.

And it's obvious (at least after the 2nd episode) that 2 of the 3 wives are miserable. And Paxton is miserable to the point where he has a medical condition. Why would they put themselves in that situation?

And a male sophmore in high school having a hot senior girl come on to him... then his Mormon (Mor-bot) buddy puts the breaks on with a bunch of religious crap... creepy. Unnatural.

The prophet. That fucking prophet. Shades of Sopranos shakedown.

Paxton's parents... sick sick sick. Break off contact. But noooooooo.

I'm undecided on this show, so far. I'll give it a chance, but I can say right now that I usually only enjoy shows with characters that have SOME redeeming qualities... so far, this show has none. In my opinion.

That's what I find funny about the show is that people actually do this to themselves in the real world.

Mormons don't like it.

However...

While HBO has not yet announced whether "Big Love" will be renewed, the ratings make it likely.
That won't be good news for Nicki Rime, a 25-year-old project manager from Orem who received the e-mail Monday and instantly forwarded it to 30 of her friends and family, even though she hasn't seen the show.

There you go.

OK, just watched the 4th episode, and I still don't like the characters, but I have figured out why this show exists.

The past few years HBO has taken a lot of flack for their content. First the Sopranos was criticized for supposedly showing "Italian Americans" in a bad way, and more recently the show Deadwood has angered (some) people to the point where lawmakers in DC are now trying to regulate cable television in order to protect children from the word "cocksucker."

Then comes Big Love, a show about a fundamentally religious family where they practice polygamy, everyone is miserable, half of them are horrible human beings, the church itself is corrupt to the point where they make the New Jersey mafia shown in The Sopranos look tame........ but they refrain from using bad words and instead say things like, "heck," "shoot," and "fudge." Therefore, the show is OK because it doesn't have bad words to make the children's ears bleed.

So how bout them apples?
