Were we supposed to understand that a) everything was just in the book, b) she did these things, and Julie was her alter ego?

Apparently the Interweb goes with theory A.

Which makes the movie a bit more disappointing, boobies excepted.

Yeah, it's kind of lame to end the story with a slightly more sophisticated version of "and then the boy fell out of bed and woke up."

Yeah, up to that point I'd give the movie a 7.5/10.

The ending brings that down to a 6/10.
