pwN3d!
I give it a 7.5 out of 10. I think if I watched it a second time I'd enjoy it more.
The following is what you can pretty much figure out from watching the trailors, or from watching the 7.5 minute preview aired on TV during Unbreakable last month.
The movie is about a group of settlers who live near a forest inhabited by a malicious creatures. "Those who we don't speak of" would peridically raid the camp and kill what they could. The people in town are pacifists. They're vegitarians who don't have firearms, so they hide as best they can. Over the years an unspoken truce with the evil woodland creatures is reached. The people do not enter the woods, and the creatures do not enter their village.
Then something changes, and the truce is broken.
The reason I believe that I'd enjoy a second viewing more is that I figured just about everthing out early on. From then on every clue I picked up made me with the movie was over so I knew I was right.

I agree that it's about as scarey as Signs. Maybe a little less so.
For JTB02.
Slight spoiler to follow. A desription of the violance in the movie.

There's no direct violance towards children.
Unlike Signs, where there was no safe place, the people in The Village have had to deal with the evil creatures for awhile, so they know how to stay safe from them. These creatures aren't hellbound on getting at the people. They're seem to be more opportunistic.
Of course, a movie where everybody does what they should would be boring. Be consoled by the fact that if you lived back in that place, you'd be safe from the critters because you wouldn't be stupid.
