Crocodile Hunter killed by stingray.

Steve Irwin, the TV presenter known as the "Crocodile Hunter," has died after being stung by a stingray in a marine accident off Australia's north coast.

Media reports say Irwin was diving in waters off Port Douglas, north of Cairns, when the incident happened on Monday morning.

Irwin, 44 was killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest, according to Cairns police sources. Irwin was filming an underwater documentary at the time.

Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality Monday morning off Port Douglas, according to Australian media.

Queensland Police Services also confirmed Irwin's death and said his family had been notified. Irwin was director of the Australian Zoo in Queensland.

He is survived by his American-born wife Terri and their two children, Bindi Sue, born 1998, and Robert (Bob), born December 2003.

I am genuinely saddened by this news.

I liked the energy that guy had. You could really tell he LOVED what he did.

I didn't care for him, but I never thought I'd see the phrase "stingray barb that went through his chest" and wouldn't wish that on anyone.

Just how big was this stingray, I wonder? "Through" is hard to imagine.

The barb alone was 20cm long. I think large rays are 6-10 feet wide. I've never seen one larger than 4 in person.

He died with his boots on (figuratively). That's all a man of action can ask.

And stabbed in the heart by a stingray..... Nathan is right. That's metal.

So, 20cm isn't really through the chest, then. Through usually implies an exit wound.

That's less gruesome, but still quite sad.

Reports I've been seeing say it pierced his heart. If so, I imagine he bled out right quick like.

Had to. & even if he didn't, pumping toxin directly into the heart would probably do the trick.

Any bets on how many days it'll be before the video hits the web?

This was discussed at the bar tonight. My assertion was one week. One of my buddies said two weeks. It was a fucking documentary w\ Steve Irwin. Chances are someone got the monumental scene on film.

Shit, that's about all anyone can ask. He got killed actively doing what he enjoyed. I fucking hope I can get killed doing what I like.

A file popped up last night around 11PM on eMule that claims to be the vid in question. I'll check when I get home to see if it's down and if so let you know if it's true.

I noticed last night on YouTube that videos were disappearing. I did a search and there were dozens of new "memorial" vids and one claiming to be the death vid. I clicked that last one and it wasn't there. Going back to the search, the newest Steve Irwin vid was 2 weeks old. Someone was dumping anything new with those keywords back off YouTube. Weird.

Yeah. Considering 1 camera had the video, and only one... I doubt we'd see it within a month, if ever.
