EVE Adventure
Anyone ever played it? That article that was posted made me look at it. I've heard of it, and may have even hit the website before. But, when I saw there was real money attached to the virtual world, it sparked my interest. One, because I can make money playing it. Two, when real money is involved, people tend to value their stuff more and play differently. I like games with consequences. And what's more consequential than real money? I did some research:
You are a person in a ship. You don't wander around space ports or planets. You are in a ship at all times. You can own as many ships as you want. All are customizable and stuff. Many different kinds to choose from. If your ship is destroyed during combat, your ship is gone. If you have another, you can go hop in it. If you don't, you get a free clunker of a ship to start over with. You have a personal hanger (bank). People can't steal from it, so, I guess it's like UO's bank. You can buy insurance for your ship. Reimbursment if you lose you ship depends on the premiums you are paying. Once your ship is destroyed, you are in a 'goo pod' and you pilot that back to your hanger to get your backup ship. If you are killed while in your goo, you die. If you bought a clone, then, you become that clone and have the skills, etc you had when you cloned. If you don't have a clone, then, you loose stats. When a ship is destroyed, the cargo floats and can be captured by anyone. Insurance does not cover cargo. Ship only. So, concequences to death. Lose your ship, and possibly skills. And you get to loot your kills, assuming they were carrying loot. You can abandone ships. If you find one, you can dump the one you are in and take the other one.
You gain skills by buying skill packs. Skill packs work like they do in The Matrix. They are implanted. Some skills are learned in an hour. Others take days. So, there is no macroing of skills. You learn once you buy the pack even if you are logged off. The ships/weapons/etc you can use are based on your skills. There is no skill limit. You can max out in everything if you want. Unlikely due to cost/time and stuff.
There are safe area, and not safe areas. The big money is in the not safe areas.
Crimes change your 'status'. Bad status and you can't go certain places and you are attacked by police. There are different factions. You attack one, and you lose points. Their enemy gives you points. The more faction points you have, the better stuff that faction will give you access to.
Didn't get into player vendors and such. I'm assuming it's there if you can make a living without combat.
Combat isn't 'fly and shoot X-Wing vs Tie' style. It's 'tactical'. Don't know much beyone that. Could by like SWG. You pick a target, then the dice are rolled based on your attack abilities, their defence abilities and you hit if the dice are high enough. You don't aim and shoot. The PC does.
Over all, the true concequences of death are VERY appealing to me. Oh, and the fact that I can sell stuff for cash does too.
There's a 30 day free trial. I'm coming off some major projects and I'm looking to have a lot of free time. Perfect time for a new addiction. Anyone tried it? Interested in trying it?

Nothing like a goddamned frothing-at-the-mouth, rabid fan base to attract new customers.

Let me know how it is and if you like it, I'll do the 30 day trial.
Actually, let me know when you start, maybe I'll join you.
I'm not big on the idea of no safe area though. What if I was playing from work and had to get up and leave quickly?

Wasn't mbilderback discussing the merits of this game a couple months back?
I do, however, find it intriguing that there's no ceiling on skillpoints & you learn even when you're offline. There's absolutely no way to get better at something simply by doing it more? Like can you become a better shot if you shoot a lot or is it merely bought skillpoints learned over time? & what rate, linear, exponential? If you have a billion skillpoints already, do you learn just as fast as someone w\ ten skillpoints?

My friend was talking about his brother selling a character (in a different game) for $600 the other day. His father-in-law was really curious about that, but he was remarkebly accepting.
He said something like, "People pay $1,500 for a weekend golf getaway, or they blow more than that on a trip to Vegas. Why not pay $1,500 for a game character that'll give you months of enjoyment?"
I bet you can make more money playing online poker than you could selling characters though.

Only if you're not getting cheated.
I know of people who work together and cheat others out of cash on online poker sites.

Leisher: There is a safe area. You can choose to leave it though. I think there are varrying degrees of security in various areas.
Malcolm: No idea. I only read the FAQ. I get the impression that the higher you go in any particular skill area, the more expensive and longer it takes to learn it. So, level one for everyone takes 1 hour. Level 5 takes two weeks. Or something like that.
Speaking of skill kit things, they are all player researched and created.

So, Tas talks me into venturing out to the big money belts to kill NPC bad guys with him. However, everywhere we go, they've already been cleared out. So, we head out to the 0.0 spot that he hunts at. We both go through the Gate to the first 0.0 area and there are drones buzzing all around the gate. Player owned drones. We are cloaked though. Tas says we are in trouble as he sees the Anti-Warp device that's been deployed. He issues a warp command to a belt away from that gate. My ship follows the order, and off I go. I have time to look back and see that he's not coming and has orange beams hitting his ship. He gives the order to target the drones first. I inform him that I'm mid warp and will head back ASAP. As my ship is slowing and coming out of warp, he informs me that he is dead. So, naturally, I don't go back. The PK informs us that if we pay him 20 million ISK, we can go back home. We turn him down. I warp to a safe place out in the middle of nowhere and start waiting things out. Tas catches up to me in his niftly little pod. We contemplate our next move. Which turned out to be 'sit there and do nothing'. Tas tries a little smack talk to try to rattle his cage a bit. Nothing. So we wait. Tas ends up logging out and warps away from my position. Eventually, someone else shows up in the area. I wait a bit in case they are fighting. When I see no chat happening in local, I message the new guy who has a negative security status, however, says he's an Anti-Pirate in his bio. I ask him if he's run into IOCTL (the PK's name). He informs me that he is at the gate with IOCTL and that IOCTL 'took down the bubble'. Not sure what that meant. He also lets me know that he is flying a Covert OPS and is cloaked. Mkay. . . I wanted to trust this guy, but, the server is going to be going down in about 1 hour 15 minutes, so I don't put this past IOCTL as an attempt to flush me out. So, I continue to talk to the new guy. The new guy informs me that IO left the gate. Low and behold, I'm picking IO up on my scanner now. He has indeed moved and is now closer to me. Then IO is gone and Virm (the new guy) lets me know he's back at the gate. We talk about a couple misc things about the canister floating at the gate. I let him know it was my friend's who didn't get away. He said "He's gone now, you can come get his stuff." I declined with the message that there wouldn't be anything good left. It wasn't much longer when we said our goodbyes and he left the area as well. So, now I'm considering trying to make it back home. And almost did it, too. Had my destination set and everything. Afterall, my WCS saved me from his warp disruptor last time. It will this time too. Then it hit me, there's two of them now. If I'm hit with TWO disruptors, will I get away? Probably not. So, the urge to get out of there was put aside and I logged out. Trapped in 0.0 space for now. Hopefully when I log in tomorrow, the area is clear and I can make my retreat. We shall see. OH YA!!! While I was talking to Virm. . a THIRD unknown showed up. -9.7 security rating. He wasn't in the area very long though. So, potentially, there were three bad guys on the other side. . .
So anyway. Thanks TAS!!
So anyway. Thanks TAS!!
Area was clear for the moment, , gonna go buy me a shuttle and re-outfit myself.
The area certainly is dangerous, but then again, I don't want to be pussy-footing around. I want to go headfirst into the PVP element and never look back!
If that means dying a lot fine, It will only make me better faster.
The insult about my loot stung the most.
First the guy said that we would pay 20m to pass back. Then he apparently looted me and lowered the price to 10m.
It's gonna be die + learn with this game, which is fine with me.

I was stuck in a place where I could literally do NOTHING but sit. Didn't dare hunt the asteroids, cause he might show up. Was stuck and powerless to do anything. My only option was to take the other, non-camped gate deeper into 0.0 territory. And I never got upset that some moron was imposing his game play on me. I had to be where I was to make real money. But he was stopping me from making it simply because he had more power than I did and he was using it. He sat there for as long as I did, doing nothing but keeping me from doing what I wanted to do.
It was great. I was happy.

Did anything at all happen? How long did it take? Did he say anything afterwards? Do you have kill rights? No Concord showed up ever? Did you get his name/corp for the list?Got pod killed today in 0.4 space.
Was in my no-defense-no-item ship and a -9.9 killed me. Bah.
Troy got his ship blown up, but didn't have any kill rights. Which I don't understand. . . But, I am going to enjoy going after him and taking out his battleship, eventually.
Yup. The problem that carebears have is that they look at it wrong. He's not really "interfering with your gameplay." His being there and doing that is just as much a part of the game as anything else that happens. And I never got upset that some moron was imposing his game play on me.
He's not a bug, he's a feature. Don't like the feature, play something else. Like maybe Second Life. No ganking there.

Well... my pod kill story sorta sucks.
I was in a 32k frigate with 1MN AB, and nothing else. I figured "who'd bother to kill me?" and went afk while warping through about 13 jumps, 3 of which were 0.4 space.
I came back, and the game had shut itself down. I booted it up, and I was at the place of my former clone, and the computer told me I had been killed.
So I've really got no idea what is was like.

Oh, as for "who" I have the person's info in-game. But he was a member of The Order of the Wombles. A pirate crew of whom I've seen 3 players. The one that killed me had been playing for 2 years and had a -9.9 sec rating. The other 2 players have -10.0 and -9.9.
As a warning, all 3 that I have seen were in 0.4 space.
