From here.

It's a visceral question, and maybe easier answered with images rather than words.

The Marlboro Man?

John Wayne on Iwo Jima?

John Maclaine ventilating a building full of terrorist assholes?

.... the Queer Eye guys?

Maybe another valid question is, "What is a Man?"

They say a boy scout becomes a man when eats his first brownie.

In high school, I had the American Literature teacher, Junior or Senior year. He didn't like me because I was a smartass (shocking, I know), and my jokes were always better than his. He cussed me publicly more than once, and he wasn't the only teacher to do so... but I digress.

Mr. Kanipe cussed you?
Or Mr. Miller.

Kanipe.

Which is why I used his real name.

He deserves it for calling me a smartass. I may be a smartass, but it's not his place to say it in from of a class full of kids.

Don't even get me started on the asshole teacher that grabbed me by the shirt and threatened to kick my ass.

I really bring out the best in people.

Lmfao, I've had similar things.. first year of highschool, my socials teacher "Fitz" or Mr.Fitzgerald.. he used to have my brother in his class a few years before and my brother was a smart ass too, so he knew what to expect, first day I said something he didn't like,.. so he first calls me a smartass so me being me, I tell him to.. "Go take a bath with your stereo" so he tells me to get out he'll talk to me in abit... 20 mins pass, he comes outside slams me into the wall and tells me i can't "fuck around" in his class cause he won't take it.. cmon what'd I do?? shrug.gif :p

I'd agree. Another way to explain it is that a boy becoming a man isn't a process, it's an event. It happens all at once, or it happens over the course of several events, but either way it's something that can later be pointed at and defined.

I'm sure there are many individual events you can point to during your time in the military, GORDON, that each pushed you towards manhood. The military tends to be ripe with such events.

I think my first one was jail. I'm stubborn, though, and had to have several more to get it to stick. :)

Then maybe you should not have been a smartass in a classroom full of kids. shrug.gif

Yeah, maybe I should have just grown the fuck up and acted like an adult? So what's his excuse?

You comment on manhood was strong. "A boy becomes a man when he is needed as a man."
I have a corolary commenet. Perhaps a leader becomes a leader when he is needed as a leader.

I have notice how so many strive for the leadership place. I have never wanted leadership. I do not want the grief or responsibility. But, when the going get tough and people are scared, they all turn and look at me. They want me to lead. So, I lead for a short time and then quickly get out of the possition. I am a natural leader but opt out.

From where I live, I think a person would need to be crazy to want to be President of the USA.
