To distance itself from the Windows 8 debacle, Microsoft is currently planning to drop the Windows 8 name and brand this next release as Windows 9. That could change, but that's the current thinking.

To distance yourself from Windows 8, you plan to call the next product Windows 9? What distance?

The new activation methods will tie a copy of Windows 9 more closely with a specific PC. It will require the user to log in to Microsoft Store, and users won’t be given an activation key.

I predict headaches.

Oh, just fuck them. It's fucking amazing. Apple won't let me swap out hardware because they're being proprietary douchebags. MS won't do it because they're dicks about their OS.

Heh, my company is still working on rolling out Windows 7 to replace XP on all computers. They are scheduled to have it completed by the end of this year.

The article talks about how this really only hits home consumers, but we buy all our OSs OEM. I've reached out to my Dell rep to see if it affects us, and what we'll need to do so it doesn't. I'll keep you posted.

So far, the new CEO is a jackass.

Massive licensing audits and now a quick drop of support for Windows 7 to try and drum up Windows 8 sales.

The only saving grace would be if Windows 9 really is coming out this fall, and it's to W8 as W7 was to Vista.

We dumped a lot of our Microsoft stuff lately, saved about $200k/year in licenses.

You know who else sucks? Cisco and their ridiculously overpriced SmartNet (warranty and support) horseshit. Fuck them too.

These big ass tech companies need to realize that they're pricing customers into looking for alternatives.

Compatibility is still a nightmare. Installation of most Linux builds is still a nightmare. It's my primary exhibit for why open source isn't a killer dev methodology.

Well wait a minute, what does "ending support" mean? I am sitting here on my wife's Windows Vista machine, and I just launched another 8 security updates that just popped up in Windows Update. How can they stop doing patches for 7 before they stop doing them for Vista? I must not understand what "ending support" means.

I don't know yet. I was confused as to how they're ending it for normal consumers, but not businesses.

Like I said, I've spoken with my Dell MS folks, and they're investigating both the Windows 7 thing, and the Windows 9 this fall rumors.

I will keep you all posted.
