So says Apple president Tim Cook.

So ignore the fact that the company was built on Macs and Macbooks. Ignore the fact that the iPod is how the company rose to the top of the business world. Ignore the iPhone and iPad. Ignore their hard push into your living room with Apple TV.

Nope, it's all about the software that doesn't happen to run on anything BUT Apple hardware...

I honestly think this is more of a sign that Apple knows it's about to get its ass kicked in hardware, and they're changing gears.

Microsoft's Surface is selling out everywhere, getting great reviews, and brings everything a laptop does to a tablet. That's something Apple could never do, and let's be honest, the only success the iPhone and iPad had were because of third party apps.

The iPhone is no longer the king of the cell phone world and was really a shitty phone with slick marketing. Oh, and that Microsoft is about to make waves there too with new phones and a new OS.

Despite their billion dollar ad campaign, Apple never got their computer sales to exceed 10% of the market. Now that the campaign is over, their market share has slipped back to the 7-8% its been for some time.

Apple TV has been a massive dud so far. Meanwhile, the X-Box 720 is coming, and the Steam Box was just unveiled. Sony has hinted that a new Playstation is on the way as well. All will do what Apple' TV does and more.

Considering all that, doesn't it seem like Apple is going to dodge the inevitable hardware wars they know they can't win, and instead start focusing on software? It's the same thing Sega did when they bowed out of the console race.

Too bad Apple makes shitty software. iOS is a POS.

Apple TV has been a massive dud so far.

You can say that again. The $35 Raspberry Pi I bought is much more powerful than the Apple TV I used to use.

I don't think they'll give up on hardware, though, regardless of what they are saying. Their empire is built on snobs paying for overpriced hardware with a slick design. Software alone would never cut it.

Their hardware is proprietary. It's the only thing that have to hold over someone's head. Otherwise, you can just jailbreak the phone and do whatever you want. That being said, the more I think about it, the more Apple really isn't about the hardware. It's the image they project.

Apple is the greatest company in the world at polishing turds.

They've perfected the art of making people want what they don't need, and what is truly not the best option.

However, that is ending and they know it.

They either need to do something revolutionary, something they've NEVER done, or sticking with hardware will put them out of business eventually.

The iPhone is getting crushed, the iPod's biggest market is kids too young for phones, nobody uses Macs except dumbfucks, and Microsoft is making a strong move into the tablet market.

What can Apple do to respond? Nothing. They responded to the Kindle, which is outselling iPads, by making a smaller iPad. Really? That's the fucking best you've got?

I'm sure they'll be holding a seance to contact the ghost of Steve Jobs, no doubt prowling the dark recesses of hell.

Yesterday Apple released an iPhone that is literally the same as the previous model. Except plastic. Which, you know, Apple hates, except when plastic is new, and cheap, or something.

The iPhone is about as innovative as Madden NFL.
