Steve Jobs is taking a leave of absence.

I expect their stock to drop today based on that news.

The last time he was away from the company it almost went under.

Edit: Should have gone under if not for Microsoft's bailout.

I wasn't implying they'd go bankrupt, but isn't there usually a bit of a dip when a company's CEO/President steps down?

I realize Apple is making big money these days, but without Jobs they sucked in the recent past.

And not to discount what they're currently doing, but their computer division sucks and couldn't compete despite an expensive and smart advertising campaign. Meanwhile, the iPad isn't setting the world on fire, and the iPhone isn't king of the hill. Sure, the move to Verizon will help, but how much?

I thought he was referring to the markets being closed today...

Yeah, MLK day = bank/market holiday.

But yes, you'll see it go down 2-5% tomorrow.

Yeah, fuck the public sector. So many people out having leisurely lunches with their families as I grabbed something from the deli.

I like a lot of things about Steve. I don't like the Apple cult, nor the air of importance he gave his creations ("magic"), but his uncompromising desire for quality, and his disdain of bullshit... I can appreciate.

I'm impressed by his decision to put the entire company behind the iMacs in... 2000? betting that the cultist would go all-in on a computer with specs of "grape," and "orange."

They did, and he won that bet.

I know a lot of people criticize his bad decisions (Lisa, Next, etc)... but the iPhone and the iPod were pretty fundamental to changing their respective industries. Admittedly, the iPhone's scroll wheel was a rip-off of the mid-90's B&O scroll wheel, but it was the single best interface for portable mp3 players, and it won. (Too bad itunes couldn't have been better).

And the iPhone, versus the Windows phone, Blackberrys, and feature phones of the day... Sure it wasn't perfect, but it was a much better vision that smartphones of the day, by a long shot.

Sure, he did some good things for technology. Apple hasn't done anything technologically innovative, but it's done a lot in terms of using polish to advance the wide-range market penetration of handheld and laptop computing.

It's a shame he let his empire go evil under his watch, though. The man was the worst kind of hypocrite. Nonetheless the world is a better place for his having been a part of it, and it's sad he's dead.
