I use a laptop as my primary machine. It's a 15.4" screen with 1200x800 resolution, or so (widescreen).

The problem with widescreen is that so many programs (browsers in particular) are not optimized for it. In Windows, all programs have the title bar, which is pretty much worthless (Like I need to take up 28 pixels just to tell me what program I have open, and provide a space for min/max/close buttons).

In FireFox, tabs go along the top, which I've been able to remedy with the Vertigo add-in. Now, though, I have a ton of deadspace on the left-hand pane, which I'd like to have stacked with my quick links. But FireFox doesn't do that.

In IE, I get this nasty navigation bar/Google search bar that I can't seem to resize or replace taking up one whole row of my browser. Why?

I know I can use F11 for fullscreen mode, but that's one more key press any time I want to get back to the things it hides.

Why aren't apps more like Visual Studio, with totally dockable and resizable panes? Or with panes I can hide behind one another and have tabs for?

Bah.
It's not me, it's someone else.
