Here's my need:
I need to be able to access my mailbox from multiple PCs in the house.
My wife needs to access her email from multiple PCs in the house.
My wife needs to access my email from multiple PCs in the house.
We do not need to access our email when not in the house.
The way I have it setup now is the email client is installed on the server with the mailbox on the server. I then run the client from the other PCs off the server. This works, but for some reason, it locks up when doing certain things. So, to create a message with attachments, there are two lock ups that occur and last for about 45 seconds each. I've lived with it, but it's getting old. Installing the mail client on each PC and pointing the mailbox to the server has the same lock ups.
I've used Pegasus email as well as Thunderbird and both do the lock up thing.
I don't want to use Outlook because I don't run virus software, and don't want to.
Any suggestions? I have Windows 2003 server still in the box (got it from a seminar I went to and have never done anything with it). So, if that comes with anything that will help, I have that at my disposal.
Thanks!!
email server/app/client
Thought of that too. But it happens EVERY time I go to add an attachment (and for each attachment after the first) and EVERY time I hit send. Often those things are happening within seconds of each other.
What sucks, is a loooong time ago, I had this issue. Fixed it by installing the same printer drivers on each PC. Wacky, right? But it worked. I then did a reload on various PCs and could never get it to work right again. But now that the wife needs to be able to read my email, and she doesn't like Pegasus (what is people's problem with this email app!?), I'm trying other stuff. She's content with Thunderbird but wishes she could 'pretty it up' more.

After many hours of trying stuff:
First I got set on the IMAP trail by a post in a forum. IMAP keeps all folders and emails and stuff on the IMAP server. So, any IMAP client that connects to that user will see the same folders and emails. I liked that cause then my email will always look the same no matter which PC I log in with. Can setup Pegasus and T-Bird as IMAP clients to get mail from IMAP servers. Cool. So I look for free IMAP servers. I found a handful. The easiest by far was Mercury, by the same guy that wrote Pegasus. Very easy to setup and worked great. It would pull email from my ISP and store it on the server. Clients would hit it and get stuff. I would create a folder in Pegasus and put mail in it. Load T-Bird and the folder and messages are there just as they should be. Neat-O! However. . . you can't put a folder in a folder. So, I'd end up with a long flat folder structure. Right now, I have them as deep as 5 folders. Suuuuuck. Also, T-Bird doesn't handle IMAP very well at all. I start deleting and adding folders and T-Bird looses track of what's going on. I start getting 'ghost' folders appearing and copies of those folders appearing. Was getting very messy. Pegasus consistantly showed the correct folders and messages. I had to manually go into the T-Bird mail directory and delete rogue ghost folders. I could see potential problems here. Also, I see that Pegasus has a check box for 'IMAP server supports folders in folders'. So, I search of other free IMAP servers with that support. I download about 7 others. Some I could get to work, others made ZERO sense to me.
Then I started looking at POP3 options. I figured out ways in both email clients to tell them to leave the messages on the POP3 server and only download new messages. Early attempts at leaving the message on the server resulted in the message being downloaded every time I checked for mail creating many copies of the same message. Check boxes solved this issue. So now I have CapeSoft Email Server running. It does not support IMAP, but that's ok for now. So, any client anywhere will get ONE copy of any given message. All messages will stay on the POP3 server allowing all clients to get the email. Downside to this is, I run Pegasus on PC1, get messages, read and file them. Then, later, I find myself on PC2 and want to check email. I get the same messages again (new PC), have to refile them and go on to new messages. This will get cumbersome as well.
I sure wish IMAP servers supported folders in folders and that T-Bird handled IMAP better.
In conclusion, I think it will be easier to adjust to a flat folder structure and manually handle any T-Bird ghost folder problems I have than it will be to file all mail multiple times.
