I walked into my server room this morning to find the room temp at approx 120 degrees.
Inside the server case temps were in the 200 degree range.
Yet nothing went down.
Amazing.
For those curious, the AC unit broke and the "reheater" unit inside was pumping out constant hot air.

On a side note, I'm suprised you didn't have anything break. I do, however, figure that you shaved a few hundered MTBF hours off almost everything.

Well I just started at the end of May and to be honest I've walked into the twilight zone. As of three years ago, this company did not have computers. The pay is really good though.
They were moving their servers and AS400 from California to Ohio, yet the week before the move, their new server room didn't have an AC unit, locked doors, racks, any sort of cabling, etc.
I had to take over the project to get things on track after explaining to my boss, the IT director who was an accountant a year ago, that the server room should have been done a month ago and waiting for the equipment to show up.
They ordered an AC unit with a heater because "you might need to heat up the room at some point, like in the winter."
I'm not making this stuff up.
As for alarms, HA! They had no idea that they should set something like that up. Remember, these are the same people who wanted to turn the heat on!
P.S. My boss makes somewhere in the range of 120K BEFORE bonuses and benefits.

How big are these companies that you guys work for with these funny stories....
It seems to me that if anything happened like that at IBM someone would be getting their ass FIRED!
For example we had a quarter close critical application running on a small, beta software server somewhere in some far flung State.
Needless to say, the quarter close came around and the application kept crashing. Mangement was pissed, demanding both 1) The name of the person who decided to put a mission crit application on that server and 2) the heads of the IT people if the server wasn't either up and running, or replaced. Were talking about a 4 hour time table before the ledger closed and if it wasn't fixed, goodbye jobs!

They should move a spiget and water hose in, just in case it gets too hot and the air conditioner quits working.
I honestly believe they would consider such a plan.
As for how big this business is, well they make a LOT of money, but the organization itself is only 60 or so people. Maybe a few more as I don't really know how many plant people there are.
As for people getting fired, they have fired people before, but they believe my boss is the most needed employee on the planet because he knows MAPICS and we have a MAPICS system.
He's an IT Director, doesn't know ANYTHING about networking, hardware, or any software other than MAPICS, he doesn't do budgets, he's done one performance review which the employee refused to sign, he doesn't do ANY programming and instead we pay an outside consultant money to do that, and he has only hired one person and botched that up so bad the company president had to get involved. Oh, and he's disrespectful to women due to his culture.
120k a year and in an unbreakable contract that runs through March.
How's your pay, job security, and workload? It drives me nuts when people say this guy is important to the company.

This describes my last director. Unfortunately, I don't think you have a monopoly on this. I'm still trying to figure out how I can get ahead by doing my job well. I have a hard time faking incompetence.
