Got this in a Humble Bundle.
TLDR: Super Stickman Golf with a message/story.
2D golf game that is, literally, Super Stickman Golf without the different balls, but with the ridiculous nonsensical holes.
You're [redacted] and you have returned to the ruins of Earth to play golf. It's what all the uber rich people who escaped Earth's environmental catastrophe do for fun.
As you play the 21 holes, you're given additional insight into what happened via Mars radio, diary entries (only given when you get par or better on a hole), and ultimately, once you beat the game. The story is legit good, but this wasn't a good way to tell it. It loses the emotional impact because of the ridiculous, frustrating gameplay.
One of the things that made SSMG work is that you didn't have to wait as your player slowly made his way to the ball via jetpack or slow shamble after every shot. Also, the pace of golf shots was much faster there, which means it was easier to get a feel for the game. Hard to get good at something if the pace is intentionally slow. This game is desperate for a mode where one can just quickly practice shots. It's very hard to be able to pull off touch shots when you're given no time to practice.
And I think the devs thought players would play through it multiple times, but it's too damn slow. There's no incentive to play through it again unless you're a sadist, because it isn't that fun. Sure, I spent an hour beating the game, but that's because I'm a story person and a completionist. I'm glad I did, but now the game has been uninstalled, never to be played again.
They actually added an Iron Man mode where you lose and start over at the first hole if you lose your ball or don't make par. I cannot fathom how mentally ill one has to be to try and earn this achievement. Based on a google search, there's a cheat so you don't have to go back to hole 1 if you fuck up, so that immediately calls into question anyone who "earned" it. That makes it even less attractive to try and earn, and it was already Lizzo covered in mayonnaise sitting in a cargo container on a 100 degree day levels of attractiveness...
Again, the story is legit good, but the game was the wrong medium to tell it. The radio content is cool and adds some charm.
Get it for $1 during a Steam sale if you're really curious about the story or loved SSMG, but otherwise skip it.

I have a soft spot for golf video games for some reason, but nothing about your review makes me curious about this one

It's not me, it's someone else.
