Oblivion - The Review
If I remember correctly...whatever hot key opens inventory can be used for all. There should be tabs for inventory, character, map, journal, etc...
Let me know tomorrow and when I'm less drunk (I think I'm turning into Malcolm), I'll load it up and see.

Yeah, that worked.
And I'm trying to stay enthusiastic about this game until I can get familiar with it so it's fun.... but god damn, I shouldn't have taken on the "find the stolen painting" quest int he castle, early in the game. Booooooooooooooooooooring. I'm going to just abandon it and begin step 2 of the main storyline quest.
Pretty game and everything. Just not PRECICELY my cup of tea. Good enough to keep slugging through. For a while.

Initially, I remember the mission you're talking about and it is boring.
I didn't much love Oblivion when it started off as I thought it didn't give you much direction or storyline.
Once you get going though, you'll find more battle focused quests.
All RPGs these days seem to be putting more non-violent options into their quests. (I'm currently going through NWN2 and I'm seeing the same thing.)

So far when I kill a crab and that I get is crab meat. I am going to stop searching the bodies but want to make sure I'm not passing up gold and such.
Unless I'm misremembering, yeah, crabs just drop crab meat, etc.
EDIT : But I've the odd notion that I once got like a coin or two from something that one would not normally find coins on, one would think.

Hell, I think it was Planescape : Torment where you only technically'd to fight like half a dozen battles (if that) to beat the game. Everything else, there was a way to avoid it or run away from it or it wasn't necessary to completing the game.Leisher wrote:All RPGs these days seem to be putting more non-violent options into their quests.

Also are some areas just a place with some people/monsters in them and nothing more?
I have been in two caves and have had the beginnings of what I thought were puzzles and mysteries but no matter where I look it seems like everything just ends.
That is cool if there are just caves to level up and collect gold/items in but so far I can't tell if I am passing parts of the game or not.

If you mean something like random encounters or a dressed up equivalent of a monster generator from Gauntlet (something that just serves to spawn critters to kill w\ no other interesting features), I recall walking thru a locale or two where some bandits or some wolves or whatever would be skulking around.
As far as "passing parts," that's probably not something you'll need to worry about. I believe the point of the game was to construct a world you could get lost in. So, even if you "pass" something up, you can damn near always come back later on.
Keep in mind that I've completed about 1% or 2% of the total game from what I understand, so my knowledge may be a bit limited.

Yes and no.
First the "yes". There are areas of the game that has nothing more than some monsters and random treasure. The monsters will most likely be specific to that area, which is cool, but they and the cave/ruins/whatever may not be linked to any quest at all.
Now the "no". Many places you find you can explore and find monsters and treasure and think nothing of the place. However, it just may be that you haven't yet found the person or thing that gives you a quest to seek out that place.

By the way, Gordo did you ever find that item I told you about?
Wsgrundy, here's a minor spoiler to an item that will help you a lot throughout the game if you want it. Head north from the southern most town and do so on the easternmost road. Eventually, on the right side of the road you will come upon an altar. There is a quest related to that alter that will grant you one of the best items in the game.
