Windows Home Server 2011
Ok, I need to devise some backup schemes, for both server and clients.
On the server I have a 500GB drive with a 40GB Partition (C:) for the OS install, and a 400GB Partition (D:) for the shared server files.
I have a separate 930GB Drive called (E:)
I have another 930GB Drive called (Z:)
(Was planning on RAIDing those but I'd have to reinstall the OS for some reason so fuck it)
Currently, the shared video/photo/music files defaulted to the D: drive. This is sorta fine. I can easily move those folders to the bigger drive if I want to in server management.
But I want to have at least 1 copy of everything on the other drive at all times.
Ok: solution me.

Something is goofy here.TPRJones wrote:You could set up a scheduled task batch file that deletes the prior backup and then does a full drive xcopy at, like, 1AM every morning.
I just scheduled a task to launch PS3 Media Server when the server boots.
It seems that instead of launching the executable, it is deleting it. Have triple checked the setting. Def says launch, and not delete.

Will tomorrow's scheduled backup only save things that changed since yesterday?
Did you set it up for full or incremental backups?

Welp, a solution, of sorts...GORDON wrote:Something is goofy here.TPRJones wrote:You could set up a scheduled task batch file that deletes the prior backup and then does a full drive xcopy at, like, 1AM every morning.

It now launches the executable, but the actual client doesn't appear on screen or in the system tray... but... it is in the list of running processes, and the PS3 can see the server and it seems to serve files to the PS3 as it is supposed to. So I dunno. Works, I guess. I just open the PS3MS manually to set all my settings, then let it auto-launch however it feels like after each reboot.

I wrote this in the server thread, but it probably belongs here:
Once set up, this thing has worked flawlessly. I VNC into the server from time to time, sometimes finding it at the "ctl-alt-delete" screen to log in, like it rebooted itself after an update, but even in that status all shared drives and files are available.
Backups seem to be running. I turned off auto-PC backups... a single backup with a full install is all I need for those when all the pics and vids and stuff I want to save are already in the nightly server backups, which according to the backup logs is running perfectly.
So far, I am digging this OS. It is getting it done. Too bad Microsoft declared 2011 is the last release.

Does anyone know if I can get this thing to download one set of updates for all of my Windows 7 machines, and get the updates from the server instead of DLing from the interweb for the same data 4 times?
Probably not since no one posts in this thread.
What sucks a little is that 2011 is the last version of Home Server they are doing, so I am not finding a lot of helpful, updated fan sites detailing this stuff.

That's too bad. Home Server has been a good product. Guess not enough people use it.GORDON wrote:What sucks a little is that 2011 is the last version of Home Server they are doing, so I am not finding a lot of helpful, updated fan sites detailing this stuff.

I was reading that WHS2011 was succeeded by Windows Server 2012 Essentials.TheCatt wrote:I believe you need something like SCE to do that.

Microsoft Home Server was like $119 when I bought it, with 10 client licenses.GORDON wrote:I was reading that WHS2011 was succeeded by Windows Server 2012 Essentials.TheCatt wrote:I believe you need something like SCE to do that.
Windows Server 2012 Essentials appears to be $400, with zero CALs.
Nice.

Re: Windows Home Server 2011
Does anyone know where to get another copy of this? amazon and newegg seem to be all out, and I don't want to spend $400 on regular microsoft server.
Probably why they stopped selling $119 home server.
