All right, I'll tell you the situation, and you give advice and I'll tell you whether or ot I've already tried it....... because I've been working on this issue for the last couple hours and it's stupid.

Situation:

-New server hardware/fresh WinXP install.
- SATA hard drive, formatted NTFS file system.
- Moved a folder onto it called "Photos" containing 3 gigs of pics we've taken over the years.
- Right-clicking on the "Photos" folder shows that it is set for "Read Only."

- That is not good. The wife wants ot rotate some of them, but she can't from her system.
- <s> I can rotate them from my system.</s>
- I am an admin on my system, and she is an admin on hers... but this may not be relevant, because...
- Even logged on to the server as an admin, I uncheck "Read only," hot "Apply," say "Yes, I would indeed like to include subfolders and files," and it does it's thing...... but when you right click on the folder again, it still says read only and we have the same editing issues.

Mission:

- Defuck this.

+++

--- what's odd is that she can rename the file names, she can edit a photo and save it under a new file name, but she can't edit a pic and save it under the same file name. <s>Yet from my system, I can. </s> So it's not truly "read only" when you can change the file name.

There's lots of pages out there with people having the same problem, but none of their answers are fixing me.

- Correction, and this simplifies he issue a little..... I can't edit from my PC, either.

I thought I did earlier, but I was mistaken.

Well, I'm not sure if I fixed the root cause, but I figured out a work-around by which I set up an identical "share" of the folder in question and set the "Share" object itself to have full authority over files.

Not sure why that would override admin authority on the local machine, itself.

You running Pro or Home on these systems?

I had a problem like this a few years ago, but it was on a Win2k server.

Something simple and stupid is to check the permissions on the folders above "My Photos". Make sure the security there is correct.

There is another level of security on MS OSs (not sure if it was in XP), but I've never needed to fuck with it except for a side project I did once as their former IT guy was paranoid in a major way. I honestly can't remember how to access it, but I remember you could set ridiculous security levels like not allowing downloads, peeps to set wallpaper, etc.

Still, considering you set up a share that worked, it's obviously something with that folder itself.
