Windows event log
Well, damn. I mean, good that there's no physical damage but that makes the problem source less certain.GORDON wrote:Ha, in the event viewer.GORDON wrote:Where's the goddam log file? It finished and automatically closed my dos prompt.

Could it be a failing CPU fan? Fan bearings going (assuming it has some) causing the funny noise and the fan slowing down. CPU overheats and system locks for protection. Or, the fan slows and the MB is reacting to the low CPU RPM by locking instead of warning and shutting down in a controlled manner.
MBs often come with utilities that monitor and give live readings for CPU heat and fan speeds (and a crap ton of other stats). Have that running and watch what happens when you game.

Could be, but I had to hard boot by holding the power button 7 seconds. No keyboard control. Even cursor was locked.
I had exactly this problem a few times a week for about six months. Never did find out why, but three weeks ago it completely stopped working at all. No response of any sort to power inputs. One new mobo later, and I have had no more hard freezes. No other parts or software were changed.
