Are there any sub-$150 DVD burners on this website that I should absolutely avoid?

Any you'd recommend?

I'm joining the year 2002 and ordering one.

I'd buy the cheapest piece of crap drive at your local retail store and buy the extended replacement deal. I bought one from CompUSA for $49 and a two year replacement deal for $7. If it dies, I get a new one. If it dies after the replacement deal expires, after two years, it will have MORE than earned it's keep. It's burned at least 125 DVDs so far. I do too much backing up of data. . . .

You can even buy dual layer burners now for <$50. However, the media is still crazy expensive, realatively speaking.

I picked one up this spring off of eBay for $22 including shipping. Working great so far.

I think I like Cake's idea.

What if I get a cheap one at Best Buy w/warranty, it breaks in 4 months, and they no longer carry that brand?

One thing to consider (and prolly the only real differentiator these days) is noise.

Some of those puppies sound like airplanes taking off. If you don't mind that, it doesn't matter too much what you get.

Best Buy sucks. Only warranty they would sell me is a 3-year one for more than the cost of the damned hardware.

That's why I ended up at CompUSA. They had a cheap one and their warrenty was cheap. Gotta make sure it's under $50 though. If you go over that, the warrenty price shoots way up. And if they don't carry that brand or can't replace or whatever, you get your money back.

CompUSA's warranty is better, as well. Go to CompUSA.

I have no idea where the nearest CompUSA is, which means it is probably at least 2 hours away.

Got a Sony dual-layer +-RW from Best Buy. We'll see how it goes.
