It's for my daughter, so for now... trying to keep things simple

A real browser would make things simpler.

IE is integrated into the parental controls automatically. That simplicity.

Interesting little article about how the media is spinning the Windows 8 story.

Despite your preferred spin, it should be interesting to see what Windows Blue is all about.

Windows 8 does not belong on laptops and desktops, but is perfect on tablets.

Microsoft has the disease of trying to be everything to everyone. Previously, I was aware of this philosophy in the .Net C# language. It's trying to be C, Java, and LISP all at once. Not surprisingly, it sucks at one (LISP), is ok at another (Java), and only handles the third because it's legacy functionality they can't let go (C programming language).

Tablets/smart devices are not used for the same shit as desktops/laptops, fucking period. Stop pretending all machines are equal, Ballmer. Do some good at the company for once in your life and fucking retire.

Clearly, Microsoft has a lot to be worried about with the lacklustre reception so far to Windows 8 but it doesn't appear to contemplating Armageddon, at least not yet.

I imagine someone falling down a deep pit doesn't give a shit they're falling until they hit the ground. I also imagine falling feels like hearing Ballmer saying, "We're now a devices and services company."

Windows 8 update: Microsoft crisis or business as usual?

After Vista and now 8 I'm not sure how one would tell those apart.

Windows 8 does not belong on laptops and desktops, but is perfect on tablets.

It's hard to imagine Microsoft making an OS slim enough to run fast on the mediocre mobile hardware. They really did that?

Vista sucked in general. 8 only sucks on non-mobile devices.

It's hard to imagine Microsoft making an OS slim enough to run fast on the mediocre mobile hardware.

Once you prune away all the legacy core/kernel bullshit (which I assume they did), you take away most of the pain of Windows systems programming. Why they elected to cripple the OS for laptops/desktops to do this is beyond me.

Yep

Why they elected to cripple the OS for laptops/desktops to do this is beyond me.

That's the question.

I realize what they were thinking, "Make everything the same across all platforms". The problem is that they overlooked the fact that most people aren't mobile computing yet, and they vastly underestimated people's preference for a mouse/keyboard over a touchscreen.

I'm not playing LoL on my tablet. I have a PC for that.

I'm not surfing the web on my tablet or phone with my PC close bye.

Etc.

Apple's iOS is different than the one on their shitty PCs/Laptops.

If you could combine Microsoft's tech know how with Apple's ability to polish turds, you'd have an unstoppable company.

Don't give them ideas. That's like Mormonism and Scientology coming together to create one massive brainwashing cult.

Windows 8.1

Rumored to include the Start button and boot to desktop.
