The Amazing Spider-Man 2
I know, I know, today's date is August 9th, 2011 and The Amazing Spider-Man isn't due out until next year. Well, that hasn't stopped them from greenlighting the sequel.

Jamie Foxx was awesome in Ray.
Aside from that, his acting has never been good enough to make me forget that I'm watching Jamie Foxx.

First, Jamie Fox signed on to play Electro.
Now, Paul Giamatti is in talks to play the Rhino. Also, Felicia Hardy is talking about an unknown role, rumored to be Black Cat.
How many super hero movies does Hollywood have to make before they realize stuffing too much into one movie equals suck?

Norman Osbourne cast.
I doubt he'll have a massive role, but that's three fucking villains in one film.

I feel better about Giamatti now knowing he grew up wanting to play Rhino. He's a good actor, and having passion for a character can make a world of difference.
As for Osbourne, I figured the same thing. The final story in this trilogy should be Spidey vs Green Goblin.
Although...I'm holding out hope for a film version of Kraven's Last Hunt.

Photos of Fox as Electro.
His makeup isn't bad, but why is his hoodie electric?

Spider-Man 2 is just the beginning.
Remember, they've already green lit 3 and 4.
Now they're going to do spin offs.

I've got to be honest, it looks very "meh".
I just don't understand the need for three super villains in a single film.

Also, Sony is moving forward with plans to turn the Spider universe into one like what Marvel has done with The Avengers. Here comes Venom and the Sinister Six films.

HUGE spoiler here.
Actually, not much of a spoiler to anyone who knows the history of Spider-Man, but pretty cool how far they're taking the detail.
Could be a big ass swerve though...

I'm trying to avoid spoilers in this review, but things slip out. I don't know your knowledge of the character, so if you want to avoid any possible spoilers, don't read this. You have been warned.
Not great, but very good.
I say that with a qualifier: There's something that is nagging at me about the movie, but I can't place it. I really enjoyed it, but it has problems. It's very possible that I just watched a very entertaining movie with GREAT acting, a decent enough story, and amazing visuals, but some bad ideas...
Let's start with the good:
-The acting is really good for the most part. Although, The person who really stood out was Emma Stone. She steals the movie. Credit the writers for giving her a solid role, but she sells Gwen Stacy. Her performance was so impressive that it made me re-think the entire Spider-Man mythos, and realize why Mary Jane is a pale imitation. Yes, it helps that Emma's very hot, but I'm telling you, I can't oversell her performance.
-The action is pretty solid.
-I think they nailed Spider-Man in action more than the first film, and absolutely more than any of Raimi's trilogy. The way he moves, his quips during combat, the way they go to super slow motion to show how he sees and moves compared to everything else around him. Etc.
-They also nail Peter Parker. Peter Parker has a horrible and tragic existence. He carries the world on his shoulders, and they portray that well. So when he dons the tights, he cuts loose. He lets all that go, and he makes jokes. However, when the tights are off you see the kid with all the responsibility.
-Sally Field is ridiculously good as Aunt May.
-They didn't overdo the villains. Coming into the film I was very worried about three villains in one movie. Without spoilers, it's simply not as issue. Based on the trailers and the villains, I know exactly what you're thinking, and what you'll expect in the movie's first 15 minutes. You're wrong.
-The ending which sets up the _ is a geek moment.
-Ryan from The Office is Smythe. If you don't read the books, that will go right over your head.
Now for the bad:
-The subplot involving his parents felt rushed and poorly executed. The payoff for it is really weak too. IMHO, it's the weakest part of the film.
-The mid-credits scene is corporate horseshit. Look, I get that the two studios made a deal, which allowed them to show a scene from X-Men: Days of Future Past during Spider-Man's credits, but it didn't make me want to see that movie more, and it took away from the Spider-Man film I just watched. And why that scene? I'm guessing because it had Jennifer Lawrence in it, but it just felt so completely out of place. I'd recommend just skipping it.
-The pacing of the film overall felt chaotic. I think they spent too much time in some areas, and too little in others. The Osborne/Parker relationship was a great example of the bad pacing. A massive hole in the story telling that tied them together, and then their whole conflict is based on the fact that they simply can't sit and talk for 5 minutes? Some friendship.
-Osborne's motivation was REALLY bad. How old was he? How old was his father? So...why the rush? Why lose your composure seconds into any conversation about it? This little detail was not well thought out.
-Andrew Garfield's English faces. The England within him really starts to come out in this film. They'd better hurry and get whatever movies they have left shot before he turns full time ugly. You'll understand what I'm talking about when you see it.
And the stuff that's a little of both:
-Electro's origin felt VERY "comic book from the 1950s". Unless I missed it, they didn't explain the "why" of it. I mean, why didn't he simply die? I'm torn on Jamie Foxx's performance too. He was really good as Max Dillon, but was less impressive as Electro. I don't think the writers gave him a ton to work with as either persona.
-The Green Goblin's origin was fine, I guess. It was better than Electro's, but still not impressive. Raimi's version was far better. The kid playing him, and I apologize to him, but he genuinely looks like a goblin before make up.
-I both liked and hated the Rhino. Aleksei isn't as obnoxious as Giamatti played him, but whatever. I do like the massive change in his costume since the way he's built in the comics wouldn't really work here.
I'm sure there are things I'm forgetting, but overall this is a good movie.
