1) Because it costs them literally nothing.
2) The run a few weekends ago was a test, I think.
3) Drives traffic to their facebook/youtube/twitter/wherever the fuck the code is posted.
4) They're not unbalancing anything by handing out all the keys. You can twink your characters with minimal effort and resources. It's actually encouraged by the game itself: the Stash in Sanctuary, the badass bonuses applying to all characters across the account, repeated boss battles for legendary drops, etc.

In retrospect, that center platform in the arena wasn't the best place to fortify in the later stages.

It generally kept the ground peeps off of us, except for the grenade throwers. Some of the upper level peeps liked to jump. I can't really think of any other place that would have saved us from getting rushed completely.

And personally, I know there were some grumbles, but I liked how last night played out. Keeping Malcolm alive from afar from wave after wave of assholes was one of those gaming moments I will not soon forget.

Thoughts:

1) Towards the end of the last wave, we'd get three groups of two enemies each pinning us there in a three-pronged crossfire. There aren't enough strategically placed crates to make it truly defensible. It was good to a point, we just tried to use it too long.

2) How in the fuck do you get the bonus objectives of killing 30+ bandits with crits? I can only think of intentionally doing what we did last night, three snipers up above (intentionally die to get there), one dude (probably assassin) runs around to distract.

3) I can't believe we got through the 5th wave. I had second winds from G's phaselock, gun kills, melee kills, and corrode/fire RoT damage.

If you like that, then the Moxxi DLC from BL1 is for you. I know that the GameStop preorder had something called the Creature Slaughter Dome. Wonder if it's some arena place where you can test out your weapons on various critters instead of just humanoids.

Also, I've got a theory...

I think that Angel, in spite of her self-identification as an AI, may be a Siren. I don't know if she's human, mechanical, digital, or amalgamation thereof but she keeps saying "phaseshift," once last night and once at the beginning. Lilith had phasewalk in BL1, Maya has phaselock in BL2.

Who was grumbling? The only grumbling I heard was not doing the story mission where someone (you) said, "Can you finally put in this power cell?"

Or are you talking about me being irritated that we all died during that fight after being bullied into staying up to play, because the LAST person to criticize anyone else for wanting to go to bed should be you sir. :D

Actually, the more I think about it, perhaps Cake said something?

And I know Malcolm said something along the lines of it feeling like a cheap victory.

I agree with you both. It was memorable, but I'd like to do it again, and do it right. I wonder if that option is available to us? If not, I guess I'll see it on the next playthrough.

Let's check as soon as we get in game tonight, and if we can do it again, we'll vote on it. Otherwise, we'll head back into the story.
