We have several computers connected by a router/wireless-access-point, which connects to the internet via cable modem. When we connect our new Dell laptop to the router with a cable, the connection speed is typical for cable modem users. However, when we use only the wireless connection, it is worse than dial-up.

Our router/a.p. is a Linksys BEFW11S4 (this uses the B version of 802.11). We used to have a laptop with a Linksys wireless---also B---PC-card which did not have this problem. I believe the built-in wireless adapter in our new laptop is version G.

Any ideas?

Tried rebooting?

Kidding.

1. The cross-brand NIC/router could be an issue. Don't know how to test it.
2. B may not like talking to G. Don't know how to test outside of getting a new G router... which would kill the rest of the B NICs in the house.
3. New Dell may have a bum wireless NIC. Don't know how to test.

There. I'm completely useless to you, and have just wasted your time by telling you what you already knew. Happy birthday.

Do you still have the alternate laptop with the B to test?

How close to the wireless router were you when testing?

Is the card set to "B" mode only, or anything like that available as a setting?

Update to latest driver on the NIC?
It's not me, it's someone else.

I twiddled some setting on the access point and it works now. Go figure.

Yup, wireless is a fickle thing. My laptop's G wireless setup likes to kick on and off regularly with no warning and without moving. I just hardwire when I can. Still glad I got it. I can play Eve while lying in bed.
