Windows 8
This is my exact task bar, right now. I like my "Start" button with the stuff it pops up, I like my quick launch on the left, I like a double row of icons for open windows... I hate that "Stacked" shit that is the default setting, and then on my system tray I don't like shit minimized. I like to see what is using system resources at all times. Then, I like the full time and date.
This is pretty much how it looked in XP, after SP2.

I like full date and time as well, but I like screen real estate. I've gotten rid of all the length stuff, and just use pictures. My laptop is wide-screen, so I have all icons vertical, same with Firefox. Instead of a separate quick launch, I dock things into the bar, and launch them from there (the ones below that dont have a light rectangle around them, for instance).

It's not me, it's someone else.
So, if Win 8 means learning a whole new system, does that mean it's time to start moving people to Linux? Linux Mint is a lot more like good old XP & Win 7 than Win 8 is. Now that Microsoft has abandoned the "how do YOU want it to be?" approach that separated them from Apple's "do it OUR way or don't do it at all" philosophy, Linux is the only OS left that you can actually do what you want to with.
I swear, it's like Apple and Microsoft stand to profit off of Linux, as much as they seem to want to keep pushing people to it.

Well, let's not go crazy.
I'd argue that 90% of people who use computers don't even know what Linux is, let alone would switch away from the two big brand names in OSs.
Also, Windows 8 isn't done. Microsoft has been quick to point out that what they released is not final. I think you'll see some changes based on the feedback they're getting.
At the end of the day, if they throw the Start button back onto the desktop mode, you'll have a much faster Windows 7 that also runs Metro (which they claim is totally customizable, but I haven't messed with that yet) giving the OS a direct link to mobile devices.

I know of a Verizon guy who was professionally demoed and trained last week on Windows 8. This guy has always been a Droid guy.
He was crazy impressed with Windows 8, and said that Apple is crippled next to W8.
We shall see...

Apparently, certain critical parts on my computer just have no Windows 8 drivers available. The driver that they think is the problem was for my controller. It was made by a small company named Intel – yes, Intel (INTC). So apparently Microsoft didn't get Intel to update the drivers for their controller on my particular model. The engineers went on to blame my PC manufacturer for other compatibility issues. The solution? Call the manufacturer and get a Windows 7 recovery disk and reinstall my old operating system. (Microsoft later sent me a fresh copy of Windows 7 through the mail).
Ouch.

I have not understood Microsoft's Windows 8 rollout at all.
With Windows 7 they were very aggressive in getting folks on board. Drivers were available for damn near everything right away.
For Windows 8, it's almost like they were secretly releasing it. There was no fanfare. No massive promotions. It was all sort of muted, like they knew it was going to suck.
And I'm with Gordo on not changing things just to change then. The Start button is YOURS Microsoft, why would you abandon it?
Microsoft just continues to ignore their biggest criticism, that they design for engineers and not consumers. Even when they do try to design for consumers, they ignore THEIR consumers, and design for Apple users, who themselves have fallen in love with Apple's mobility platforms which are a ripoff of Microsoft...
Fucking insanity.

Sinofsky leaving was telling. For those of you who don't know, that's the dude that ushered the Windows 7 release after the debacle known as Vista.

Exactly! WTF is with Microsoft and their "every other one is good" cycle?
Instead of working on a new OS so soon after the last one, they should have been working on mobility. Namely:
1. How to make W7 for mobile devices so that it maintains familiarity, which USERS LOVE (Fuck you engineers!!!!).
2. How to integrate your mobile device with your laptop/desktop, and make transiting your work, data, etc. from one to the other seamless.
And why can't I got to Best Buy to get a stand alone copy of Windows 8 or the Surface tablet? Why are all the W8 boxes different colors, which indicate differences in the product even though there aren't? Why are all the boxes listed as upgrade versions? Why do you advertise W8 Pro for the Surface, but only Windows RT is available?

They burn out all the incompetent personnel for release, they leave, the next one sucks, then they spin the wheel again. Lately, it's been coming up 50/50. They've not always been that lucky.Leisher wrote:Exactly! WTF is with Microsoft and their "every other one is good" cycle?

Yeah, I was going to say W8 sucking introduces new questions as to why he quit.
I can see it going either way... either he was in charge and knew he fucked up, or someone else was making too many bad decisions and he wasn't going to take the rap for it.

Maybe Microsoft has accepted that this is inevitable and they've dumped W8 out as quickly and quietly as possible so they can get it out of the way and move on to the next iteration.Leisher wrote:Exactly! WTF is with Microsoft and their "every other one is good" cycle?
