Successful, but a failure.

In other words, the guy got paid a good amount, but 40% of players still pirated his free game.

I think that's more about not having a free demo.

Pay what you want is fine and all, but until I try out a game to make sure it's not total shit, what I am willing to pay is $0. Once I've gotten a taste, that's when I'll consider paying more.

For people like me, lack of a demo = more pirating. But then if I like it, I go and buy it. How many of those "pirated" installs were later replaced with legitimate ones? Could he count that in his data? I bet not.
