it might be justified...

This is interesting.

I think both parties are in the wrong. Gamestop should NOT be opening games to take something out, especially if it has value to the consumer.

However, I see their point. You'd never see Pepsi coupons on the side of McDonald's cups containing Coca Cola. I think the deal was a knife in the back from to Square Enix to the stores kind enough to carry their games.

A smarter move on Gamestop's part would have been to simply return the games and not sell them. If they made a big enough stink about it, other retailers might have followed suit.

Update: Gamestop IS returning their copies.

This is insane. Gamestop should not open a product and modify it in any way.

If they want to return it, return it.

I'm a bit torn, but I think I lean slightly against Game Stop. I see the point, but I feel like TOO BAD. If Game Stop is trying to sell something that someone else can give away for free, well, too bad.

Not that I would buy a game from a brick-and-mortar, ever.

That's the oddest part. OnLine isn't just giving it away for free. Well yes, THEY are, but you have to actually buy a copy of the game first. So you need to buy it before you can get it for free...

Oh, and fuck OnLive. I wish they'd hurry up and go out of business. That concept (SaaS) works for movies, but for games and most business functions it's bullshit.

I don't care for OnLive, but what GameStop did is despicable. It's not that they're screwing with their competition, that's neither here nor there. It's that they took something away from their customers without even telling them.

They should have just refused to sell them. Or at most they could have removed them, but then put on a sticker on the side telling all customers that the product had been altered by Gamestop. To do it without consent or notification is shitty.

Attempting to apologize with a $50 gift card and a coupon to buy two used games get one free.

The gift card is cool but asking people to spend more money at your store in order to get a free apology game seems a bit dickish.

Completely wrong of them. They should apologize by offering to pay for access to the game on the OnLive service for anyone that they stole it from that wants it. Or if they don't want to do that, they should offer $50 cash, or a $50 visa gift card, or something like that. $50 that is only good for buying more things they've fucked with is no good.

OnLive should make an announcement that anyone that doesn't have the game on their service can fax or email a scanned copy of their Gamestop receipt and get the game for free. Just as a fuck you to Gamestop.
