iPad

A glorified cellphone that isn't a cellphone.

We got carpet installed in most of our house the other night, so most of our crap is still displaced. My main workstation is downstairs in the living room on the floor. Last night, Allie (almost 3 years old) was playing with it on the floor, so I helped her play with it, doing some Wiggles game or something. She kept wanting to touch the screen to make it go. But, of course, it wasn't a touchscreen.

A lightbulb just clicked - The iPad. A computer for 3 year olds.

Seriously.

But, as for me, no.

Eh, I don't see why everyone's so excited. It's just a supersized iPod Touch, the same funcionality but more inconveniently sized.

Now if it had dual screens that clamshelled closed, but when opened became one nearly seemless unit, that would be something interesting.

Honestly, I've mostly heard people being unhappy with it.

I don't see success for this product. But I do see niches. Kitchen computing, kid computing, stuff like that.

The chick on CNN just said it was a product with an "unfortunate name."

I guess she's a feminine-napkin-gal.

I was disgusted by the Apple cultists who have been clamoring for this product for the past month without knowing anything about it. These assholes get all pissy when you suggest that maybe they're a little too biased to have opinions that matter, yet they're immediately praising a product they know nothing about just because Apple makes it.

"Yay, our lord Steve Jobs made us a laptop without a keyboard! Yay! Take that brainwashed minions of Microsoft!"

A computer for 3 year olds.

I've always described Apple products as the perfect gift for someone who needs a computer, but is too stupid to use one.

And Gordon, that's not the first time I've heard people talking about the name in that manner. Pretty funny.

I'm pretty serious about the 3 year old comment though. This computer is VERY accessible to 3 to 8 year olds. Simple controls, intuitive touch controls, no mouse/keyboard to worry about.

Sure it's $500 minimum, and they'd probably break it, but I think it's a market.

But from a practical level, I see no value. Yes, I want a bigger screen in my mobile device, and yes, I'd like to get my newspaper/magazines mobilely, with less clutter, but this isn't that. i still need something that fits in my pocket. I'm not hip enough to weigh myself down with a carry bag or whatever cityfolk use.

My son has been using a mouse since he was 2, so....

Would this be a good device to hang on the kitchen wall as a general message board/recipe database/grocery list thingie?

Ah. I guess I don't allow my daughter to use the computer, so she's never had a chance to mouse.

(This also means I'm a better parent than you. And my penis is bigger. Or something)

Playhouse Disney.com isn't going to play itself.

My daughter has also been using a mouse and keyboard since she was 2. Playhouse Disney, Nick Jr., and now Webkinz are the sites she hits most often. She's also got a handful of educational programs that she loves to play. In fact, she's getting her own laptop within the next few months. (via leftovers from here at work)

The concept of the touch screen is cool, and eventually will be everywhere, but I think avoiding it for younger children is the smart move. You'd be cleaning it daily. Not to mention how often they're physically drop that iPad.

Plus, who hates their child enough to buy them an Apple and immediately put them behind any children using a Windows based PC?

No one in their marketting department did a YouTube search on iPad before they decided to name this thing? (try "iPad mad tv")

Yeah, it's a big iTouch. I see this one joining the ranks of the Apple TV thingie.

Apple sent Daniel Tosh an iPad to try out.

Here's what he did with it.

He said they never even turned it on.

On the next episode, he talked about getting lots of hate mail from Apple cultists.

P.S. If you haven't seen Tosh.0, check it out. It's like Web Soup, but funny.

What a waste of a perfectly good iPod Touch with a thyroid condition.

I guess I take my words back. Just bought a shiny new 32GB model. Opinions later.

As far as I know, the only browsing restriction is No Flash. Which, I can't really disagree with. Flash is a buggy security-hole pile of shit.

That way too many people still use. I hope it falls out of favour before too long.

Well it's good then that you don't have the choice.

Yeah, I'm torn. I hate Flash, but I don't like Apple not letting me have Flash.

We'll see if it actually matters as I use the device.
