They forced all of their Gmail users into being "Buzz" users.

Buzz is their new social networking site.

An invasion of privacy? Yes, but not a horrific one. I mean, all they did was sign you up for their new service.

No, they went above and beyond later...
Gmail account holders who then began using Buzz found their first public posting was essentially a list of their most frequent e-mail contacts. Buzz decided for itself who users e-mailed most often, then put those users on a list as "followers" and made that list public. Quickly, nightmare hypothetical scenarios were published -- workers who had recently e-mailed about job interviews had their job hunt exposed, for example. Cheating lovers or spouses were outed.

No, they didn't sign you up, you had to click that you wanted to join. At least, that's what happened for me.

From the article:
"Regardless of whether a user clicked the button labeled 'Sweet! Check out Buzz' or “Nah, go to my inbox,’ Google Buzz was activated," the complaint says.

Hmmmm. I didn't click opt-in for it, but I do have the following option now showing as the default selection in gmail setup: "Show the list of people I'm following and the list of people following me on my public Google profile"

However I don't have a Google profile, so no worries. But someone with a Google profile could possibly be annoyed with this.

At some point Google is going to step in a pile from which they can't remove the stink.

They've been skating the edge for a while.

At least a decade off.

I'd say fewer than 5.

Hopefully they aren't buying up media companies by then.

Well, MS & Yahoo just shoved their search efforts together, so we'll see if they can dent the big G. I doubt it.
