The Girl Next Door - Box Cover Spoilers

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

The following paragraph is essentially what you'd see on the back of the DVD box. If you don't want to read it because you want to go into this film totally fresh, well I have to ask why the hell did you even click into this chain?

Anyway, the story goes like this:
An honor student busting his ass through high school has everything to show for it, except good times. He's not a nerd, but he doesn't fit in with the "in" crowd. Coincidentally, the day he realizes this is the day a porn star trying to turn her life around moves in next door. This poor lad gets involved with her and learns to live life to its fullest, however in doing so he gets tangled in a big mess that threatens his future.

Sound familiar? It should! This is mainstream Hollywood, where there are no original ideas to be found.

In case you haven't figured it out yet, this is a remake of Risky Business. The film that launched Tom Cruise's career.

They even use the same "What the fuck" gimmick.

Despite this being a remake, I have to admit, its decent. The story details are varied enough to keep things fresh. Mainly the performances are what really sets the movie apart.

In Risky Business, there were some good performances, but Cruise was the guy who sold the film. Here its more of a team effort as the top 3 roles all were excellently done. Seriously, the casting was top notch. I'm not sure they could have gotten better people.

Emile Hirsch is in Cruise's role and while he doesn't have seem to have that "something" that helps a person carry a film on their own, what he does have is an innocence about him that's perfect for this role.

Elisha Cuthbert is in Rebecca De Mornay's role and, quite honestly, does a much better job. She's by far MUCH, MUCH hotter than Rebecca and portrays the "good girl that's lost her way" a lot better. The eyes are the window to the soul, and using them to sell your part is something a lot of actors don't understand. Elisha gets it and does it throughout the film. A great job.

Timothy Olyphant plays Kelly, Elisha's porn producer. I don't want to say anything about him so as not to spoil anything, although if you've seen Risky Business... Anyway, he's fantastic. He's a scene stealer in this role.

Of special note is Chris Marquette who plays one of Emile's friends. This kid is the new John Cusack.

The plot gets a bit hokey towards the end, but its ok. The actors all do their jobs so you're pulling for them at that point no matter how corny the story gets.

Oh, and I should mention that there's T&A. Lots of it. God bless America.

This is what teen movies should be about: unlikely situations that teach good values and have lots of gratuitous nudity.

Risky Business with hotter women? Yeah, that's worth the effort.

7 out of 10.

I thought I reviewed this one already. . .

Anyway, I surprised as to how good it was. There were some times that were VERY entertaining. A couple times they stretched reality/believability. But over all, it actually was a really good movie. Definately should be on the watch list.

Elisha Cuthbert is very very very hot. Loved this movie. The rest of the cast did a good job too.
