While in Azkaban he was beat down and going crazy and had given up hope which is why he was there for so long. Then the Minister of Magic came to inspect Azakban and while there Sirius asked Minister for the paper he was carrying with him. It was the daily prophet that Ron was showing everyone from their trip to Egypt and Sirius saw pettygrew as scabbers on Rons shoulder. From that point he was bent on revenge and started fighting off the dementors untill he had enought sanity/strength to change into the dog and escape. The dog not being important to the dementors since they don't have has strong of memories and other prisoners were around to suck life from.
Thats for the explanation. I looked online and saw that Sirius was one of three unregistered people who could turn into animals. I don't think the other two have been revealed yet. I guess in future movies we'll be surprised by a couple more.
The four were the key to this whole story! Two of them were main characters, one other was the secondary villian of the book, and the fourth is dead but still very important to teh story. They skipped all of that?!
WTH?!?!

They didn't explain it in the film but the map was made by all four when they were friends in school which is why Lupin knew how it worked and the white stag that appear across the lake when the dementors are attacking Harry and Sirius was a the animal Harry's Dad changed into. The white blob that comes out of the wand when you are driving away the dementors take the same of something important to you when done properly.

Both were in the movie. They just didn't go deep into their past. Lupin was more just someone who knew Harry's parents and was helping Harry and pettigrew was a friend who betrayed them.

**SPOILER**
Well being a wherewolf didn't count. That's something else I believe. I think that was even pointed out in the film.
Duh on me. Ratman being unregistered was one. I had figured that he changed himself with some spell (making it mostly perminant), hense the retension of rat-like features. Certainly running off, changing to human form, and going underground would be a better option than being a rat. But I guess he did change himself back to a rat without any special potions.
As far as Harry's dad, I was under the impression that the three unregistered animagi were still alive. I also assumed that, being a good guy, Harry's dad (not that he ever appeared in the film) would have been registered if he was an animagi. The stag in the movie was a patronis, which as I understand it is Harry's (and his father's) protecting symbol.

I did some searching. These are the Animagi in the books:
Sirius Black
James Potter
Remus Lupin
Prof McGonagall
Peter Pettigrew
Rita Skeeter
Upon further looking I see that Rita Skeeter is an unregistered Animagus. That would make her #3, according to my logic anyway.
I am pretty sure the 4 tprjones is refering too are Lupin, Pettigrew, James Potter, and Sirius. Pettigrew, Potter, and Sirius all became animals so they could support their friend and be with him.
No one knew that Lupin was the werewolf besides the 3 friends, snape, and Dumbledore. That was the point of the shrieking shack. Dumbledore would have Lupin hide there when he was a wolf and he could howl and scream and no one would bother him and he wouldn't hurt others since it was an empty house and Dumbledore spread the most haunted building the England story.
I thought that Hermoine countdown clock was creepy. She's still a little girl. At least the Olsen twins were in puberty when everyone started lusting after them.
Did you hear that one of the twins is in the hospital for being anorexic? I guess she didn't eat any birthday cake last week, eh?
The Olsen story was on Fark yesterday. I'm not a fan, or pervert, so I didn't think it was a big deal.
Even though they're not identical, it must suck to be a famous woman with an equally famous twin sister. Society is tough, and you don't want to be known as "the fat one."
