Fuck you EA.

I just fulfilled my wife's desire to get a list of what I want for Christmas this year and of the 4 games EA released that I would've put on there, none were listed due to SecureRom.

4 purchases gone so you could stick a program on legit consumers PCs to spy on them. Oh, I'm sorry, you claim it's to prevent piracy. It's done a fine job since all 4 games are easily available at any pirate site.

If I were in charge of EA, I'd absolutely clean house. This SecureRom bullshit is the latest misstep from a company that continually treats its customers like crap. Not to mention the terrible uninspired product coming out of in house development.

The publishers or either idiots or liars. Those that think securom stops/reduces pirating are idiots and the other a liars because this stuff is to try and stop used game sales but they won't come out and say that.

For the most part I like to think that I am for the government staying out of things but I wouldn't mind a big sticker on the front of spore and red alert 3 telling people that chances are they won't be able to sell this game when they are done. People should do their own research but kids are people that aren't into gaming are stupid about the industry.

That is my biggest issue with steam is that there is no resale market and yet their games are just as expensive as the others. I want to play Left 4 Dead at some point but will wait until the yellow box(made that up) comes out with Left 4 Dead, HL2:Ep3, and Portal 2 comes out and then get a price drop to $25.

To give Valve credit though, the deals they offer through Steam are simply unbelievable. Recently offers had their ENTIRE CATALOG for $99 and HL for $.99.

Outside of Googlex (or whatever), where is the resell market for PC Games? I seriously have hundreds of PC Games sitting around.

I have unloaded all my PC games on either ebay or Goozex. I don't get as much as I do for my console games but I sell them for a price I am happy with. I can actually get more for AoEIII right now in trade on goozex then I paid for it brand new. That of course is rare but I still see a market.

They do offer good deals but if you are not going to allow me to resell the game after I am done playing and I have to connect to a server to play the game then I don't think it is out of the question to sell at a lower price since the used market and pirates steal all their profits. :)

Interesting question, does pirating hit Valve as hard as other developers in terms of dollars?

Another interesting question, would it be wrong to do a nationwide advertising campaign instructing people on how to steal EA games?

I have no idea but I know that gamecube enjoy low to no pirating because of the specialized discs and how the GC spun the discs in the other direction and they never lowered any of their prices.

EA lobbyists, among others, have made it illegal to talk about how to crack security/encryption. One guy even got in trouble a while back for posting, "To beat this anti-copying scheme, take a sharpie and make a ring around the outside of the disk." I know he got sued, don't know what became of it.

And you can still occasionally find the prime number in signatures that you need to decode a DVD, even though it is illegal to write down that specific prime number.

There IT nerd security conference every year is called Defcon. Rumour has it that over the years, loads of talks've been pulled at the last minute due to a call from one agency (sometimes gov't, sometimes not) or another. They've definitely'd dudes talk their that've been accused of compromising the security of some large entity.

It's not that you need this number to decode a DVD as in it's a key of some sort. Rather if you take this number, feed the binary representation into an unzipping program (gkzip), you end up with the source code for the decoding program in C, which looks like this.

So it's not that the number itself is top secret, it's just an interesting quirk of the way that piece of code was written and te way that gkzip works that that particular number can, if manipulated properly, end up giving you the code you need to crack DVDs.

It's absurd, and I won't refrain from publishing the number if I feel like it. Although if this post makes you nervous, feel free to pull it, it's your board after all.
