The more advanced they get...
the more they act like PCs.
Here's something you expect from a console, the PS3, in this case...insert the disc and wait 20 minutes while it installs to your PS3's hard drive.
And as the company shills say "But after that ONE TIME, it loads ultra fast!!!"
WOW!!! What other gaming device does that sound like???

There will come a day when you just buy the newest console emulator software or card instead of buying a totally separate piece of hardware.
Once the public figures out how to hook their computer monitors up to their TVs & have it look good w\o issue, then the console industry is looking fucked as far as convincing anyone to buy a clunky, rectangular $400 kludge.
EDIT : Seriously, if PCs were designed w\ a "gaming mode" in mind, no one would need to buy a fucking console.

There have already been attempts at "PC consoles" where you can just pop in the CD/DVD and play like a console. I don't think it took off.
The problem PCs face, outside of the infinite combinations of hardware and software that game developers must face, is that just by design, and due to their own advantage, PC gaming might never be "put disc in drive and play".
I think the other big problem, that is on the verge of disappearing, is that PCs aren't in the living room. Most home PCs are in a spot that isn't exactly setup for entertaining friends. However, with more and more technology pushing your PC's output to any TV in the house, how long before your PC can act as a console for any TV in your home?

The TV thing will be the easiest. Before too long, your PC will be hooked to your TV, Tivo, cable box, etc. Your PC will become the nerve center of all things entertainment.Leisher wrote:There have already been attempts at "PC consoles" where you can just pop in the CD/DVD and play like a console. The hardware issue is the biggest one I've seen. PC architecture is just ugly compared to a console. You'll probably need a nice vid card and some memory to pull off graphics indistinguishable from the 360 or PS3.
Keep in mind that folk like Alienware & others target shit to gamers. I could see them encouraging folk to build a bad-ass enough system & saying, "If you build it like this, you can effectively simulate any console on the market currently." Buying the PS3, 360, & Wii separately would be expensive. But if you could get them in your PC which you were gonna tweak all to hell anyhow, that's just bonus.

You lost me there.
PC Hardware is vastly superior to consoles. It's not even a contest. We're comparing "new shit comes out every day" PC hardware against "This stuff wasn't cutting edge 4 years ago when it was designed" consoles.
There is a reason consoles cost $200-$600 and that's because they use older technology that most PCs, even budget ones, destroy.

Yeah, but consoles don't need to be as versatile as PCs. Their hardware can afford to be limited.Leisher wrote:You lost me there. The hardware issue is the biggest one I've seen. Yeah, but consoles don't need to be as versatile as PCs. Their hardware can afford to be limited.
But that was my original point about PCs.
Consoles are standardized which is why they don't have as many bugs and such. However, its also why they have a lot less freedom in terms of moding games and such.

I think PCs will get clever to the point where you can plug in hardware that can afford that level of specialization. Consoles can have their innards optimized in ways PCs cannot. For the moment.Leisher wrote:But that was my original point about PCs.Yeah, but consoles don't need to be as versatile as PCs. Their hardware can afford to be limited.

The standardized hardware peels a big chunk off software development time. And the more games they can push out in a year (or two or whatever), the more money they can make.
