Another Half-Life 2 single player mod.
This time you are cast as some dude named "Gordon Freeman".
Sidenote: I don't care what you think of Valve or Steam, this is some cool shit right here. While other companies (hell, all of 'em) are suing fans for making mods about their properties, Valve embraces them and even helps to distribute their work.
The story starts off with you on a boat headed to rescue some no name scientist. The boat comes under attack, you're captured, and end up at the same prison that you were trying to infiltrate anyway. So thank the Combine for giving you a ride and start the mission.
This mod is only takes about 2 hours to run through (at most) and features gimmicks galore. Most every encounter has been planned out. The majority of gameplay here is you getting instructions then you carry them out. It sounds bad, but it actually plays out well enough. Although it does feel like someone is holding your hand throughout the mod.
You'll see pretty much everything imaginable in terms of typical HL enemies, but nothing is ever really challenging with the possible exception of a fight near the end which is just ridiculous, but in a fun way.
Still, I couldn't help notice that I could survive an awful lot, so I suspect that the damage levels were turned down a bit. Fair enough, since a few of the events would easily kill you the first time you encounter them, which would've meant lots of reloading, and thus, a more "puzzle-like" feel to the gameplay.
Still, the storyline here, while maybe not the best, was implemented the best. Very easy to follow from start to finish. Ok, the voice acting was bad as they are amateurs, but bravo for their attempts.
Overall, I highly recommend the mod. It's a great 2 hour addition to the HL universe. (Although be warned that because it features the main character, other "official" storylines could render it more fantasy than actually occurring.)
8 out of 10 (mod score)
