I find it hard to follow the premise that serial killers were a balancing tool in some way. Also kinda weird to think they kinda came out of nowhere, existed for a few decades, and are now basically gone.
I figured they were more like "as society grows, it grows too much, and people get alienated and crazy" or something. Which I guess is kinda like your limit theory, but not impactful enough to be.

Why? It occurs everywhere in nature. There have been examples of some animals who did hunt for fun and not just survival.
There are always outliers, but I don't know that they're gone or didn't exist before. I just think they're in different forms. Now: Mass shooters. Prior to more civilized society there are loads of examples of people committing a shitton of murder, just not stylized like the modern serial killer. How many Wild West outlaws would be serial killers by today's standards? Jack the Ripper is often called the first serial killer, but was he? I think Vlad the Impaler would have an argument against that. How about Genghis Khan and his pyramids made of heads?

They are definitely still out there, but I do think some of these mass shooters would have been serial killers in a different era.
Aurora, the gay Muslim that shot up the nightclub, that piece of shit that shot up the elementary in Connecticut, possibly the Vegas shooter, etc. are all people that share similarities with serial killers.
