Studios are putting together fan focus groups to avoid backlash for projects.
Listen, this is a smart move and long overdue.
But holy shit...the arrogance is not just off the charts, it's in a whole other universe.
The fact that they keep saying "toxic fandom" is the problem, and never once acknowledge how it's wrong to change source material, push their politics using said source material, or that maybe...just maybe...they aren't as creative and talented as they believe is as delusional as it gets.
Here's a thought: Why are you creating uber successful franchises on your own if you are so talented? Why do you need to license existing successful IPs?
It's because you can't create something so successful. So swallow your pride, keep your moronic politics (created from living a sheltered life devoid of real adversity) to yourself, and stick to the source material. This isn't hard. Not only will you make gobs of money, but the majority of the public will praise you as heroes.

I grow weary of hearing "Real fans wouldn't hate this."
The "real fans" are literally the only group with an emotional attachment to the IP, and are literally the only group that would feel wounded and upset when the IP is fucked up.
All of these writers and producers are lashing out, inventing "toxic fandoms," trying to save their jobs, because they're dangerously close to people finding out they have no talent, nor ability to produce good content.

This woman breaks down the Variety article and takes it to task in possibly one of the most well thought out and reasoned arguments I've ever seen on the interwebs.
