So there's no way it can be as good as Best Picture Fury Road.
But does it look ok?

Looks like a bit more CGI than MM:FR. Ok, a lot more. I thought one of the things about MM:FR was the sparse use of CGI.
Still, this has my attention. I didn't recognize Hemsworth even after knowing it was him. And Anna is a great actress.

Saw it.
A worthy inclusion to the franchise.
Begins well before, and ends the morning of Fury Road.

It bombed over the weekend, but I hope it has legs. It's a really good movie.

I feel like everything has bombed in May.
It's not me, it's someone else.

Drinker agrees with Gordon and has some thoughts about audience apathy.
I think this is a case of the dog chasing its own tail. You want theatrical releases to do better, then stop streaming movies two weeks after they've left the theater.

Kid and I have a matinee bought for tomorrow.
Doing what we can to support the movie. We want a sequel.

Me and the kid watched it again, doing our part to get the numbers up.
Second time around, I was able to look at the cinematography more, since I wasn't riveted by the story.
There are a couple of absolutely brilliant technical film scenes. Hard to describe without being able to talk with my hands. But this: the initial ambush of the Citadel war rig as it leaves GasTown. There's a long, single cut, and sets a complex scene with a single, 30 second camera sweep. It was art.

I just googled movies that were out now to see if I could blow off work early and go see a flick, and this was the only one that even piqued my interest a little. so much shit out there right now.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024)
I understand why this didn't do better. The story is fine for what it is, but did we need this particular prequel? I think had Miller just made another Mad Max centered film it would have been a bigger hit. Mad Max without Mad Max is a tough sell. The "blink and you miss it" cameo doesn't count as him being in it.
The weakest part of the story occurs because this movie ends right where Mad Max: Fury Road starts. That makes the recasting that much more blatant and hurts the overall product. Additionally, just as Fury Road wasn't just a Mad Max story, this wasn't just a Furiosa story. This film did not lead us to her being the badass she is with the reputation she had in Fury Road.
I will say the villain's comeuppance was one of the best in movie history.
The acting is solid throughout. Anna Joy Taylor was better than I expected. She's a fantastic actress, but this was a more physical role. They kept it reality based though and didn't make her the typical Mary Sue we see so much out of Hollywood these days. Chris Hemsworth is unrecognizable. Special shout out to Tom Burke who stole scenes as Pretorian Jack.
That being said, the film is gorgeous as you would expect. Miller could make a drive to Dunkin' must see. (In fact, there's your commercial for next year's SB Dunkin'.) I could watch hours upon hours of his cars battles and never get bored.

Did you notice this scene? How it told a tactical story in a single, short sweep?
"Be bold, and mighty forces will come to your aid."
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024)
I did, Hemsworth watching from the top of the mountain, and then directing his gang to take out the convoy as it came around a pass and out of site. The bikes leaving their hideaway to meet it at the perfect time...
But wasn't it the other direction? Wasn't it heading to Gastown? Because the next scene
Also, that is a flaw in the movie. Every shot in both films shows the Citadel and Gastown being a straight shot to one another. And why wasn't Pretorian Jack driving that truck? Did he take a sick day?

Yes. For some reason I was immediately struck by how masterfully that scene was shot. We were even up there on the hilltop with Hemsworth, watching it unfold next to him.
