I'm stuck on the idea of this company having thousands of tech people.
The Twitter app is not that complex.... in fact, it is incredibly simple. I can't see it, itself, having more than a thousand lines of code. That's small enough for one high-level programmer to easily have all in his head. Then another guy as a backup, and then maybe a newbie or two in the wings, coming up. Pay these architects half a mill salary each, to keep them in place forever.
Two people who are experts at making a mobile app look nice. One marketing/art design graduate, one apprentice.
Back office devs: peeps writing and watching the network code. Again, 1 person should know what the whole thing is doing. Give them a couple backups. Once it's stable, it should be stable until some idiot gets fooled by a salesman decides to change the hardware platform.
Server people. If they have 15 people, then they have a bunch of people sitting around doing nothing but watching performance/hardware utilization levels most of the time. Twitter does one simple thing, repetitively. The know their servers need to handle peak demand sometimes, and the equipment should be in place. Server packs are easily replaceable if one burns out, without downtime. Call it 50 people in case they want to be careful, over 3 shifts. 10 each at satellite locations, doing the mirror backups and offsite nodes.
I've written complex, multi-threaded systems in a couple weeks, solo, 7-10k lines of code over multiple objects. The idea that you need thousands of programmers for such a small-scoped application is ludicrous to me. It's a ton of managers who don't do their jobs well, padding their numbers and budgets, doing nothing but keeping their own jobs.
There are other departments that will need more people, I guess. Peeps who are "verifying" for that blue checkmark, people deleting child pornography. The person in the locked room that monitors the connection the British Intelligence Agency uses to copy all twitter traffic. Fine. But I wouldn't call those people "IT." More like user managers.

I would wager that the vast majority of employees at social media companies, hell tech companies, are not technically skilled.
This is why Twitter, Meta, and Google can layoff tons of people and it doesn't affect the huge number of open tech jobs.

I saw a post about this the other day, how people who don't know what they're doing perceive things as being much simpler than they are in the tech world.
Twitter has 6,000 tweets per second. Managing anything at that scale is super freaking hard. Especially if you want global HA.

Often, the people doing this are contractors, not employees.

I'm not perceiving their jobs as simple, I'm perceiving them as redundant. As I said, I've personally written mainframe programs that handled a hundred PC orders per second. Much more complex than twitters "read/write," which is essentially all it is. It isn't that difficult, and I was mediocre at best.
These places are waaaay overstaffed with devs.

Sweet. How many likes/retweets/shares/etc did those orders get per second? How many millions of people viewing the orders at once?GORDON wrote: ↑Sun Nov 13, 2022 5:45 pm I'm not perceiving their jobs as simple, I'm perceiving them as redundant. You can always add more processors and threads.

I truly believe that your hatred for someone, like Musk, clouds your ability to look at something in an unbiased way.
Did you see the numbers behind the lunches? $400/per employee is what it averaged out to. This is in a workplace with an average in office workrate of around 10%, and maxed at 25%. They, literally, had more people making the lunches than eating them.
At what point is it ok for someone who bought a business to make changes to make the business profitable? Or do we always have to condemn them because they vote a certain way or for whatever reason we hate them?
Hell man, even I can admit Brady is a good QB and Tomlin is a decent HC.

Tomlin is the problem.
[Saturday]'s better than Tomlin!
Mike Tomlin sucks.
At any rate. I never saw the twitter lunch prices. If they're run inefficiently, they should fix that. But, he just ordered everyone back to the office, so wouldn't that improve the efficiency already?Heck of a tight ship Tomlin runs...
He can do whatever the hell he wants. And I'll comment on what I want.
It's not me, it's someone else.
I've given Tomlin credit when he deserves it, but overall he sucks and the proof is in the pudding. But this is not the thread for that discussion.
Maybe, but he's recouping costs and freebies are going to be the first thing cut. When Steve Jobs took Apple back over the first thing he did was cut EVERYTHING Apple was doing that wasn't directly into profits. Weird how the same people fine with that are now criticizing Elon for it.
I really, really want to know what Elon did that gave you such a hate boner for him.

Apple was on death's door. They had to take $$ from Microsoft to stay alive.
Well, he runs a "public square," 20 years later, with lots of people on said public square being fired. So yeah, there's going to be 100x more noise about it, if not 10000x more.
I don't have a hate boner, I just think he's a complete asshole who's snaked his way into good places based on a single half-decent thing he did 20 years ago. Kinda like Mark Cuban, but Mark's much less of an asshole these days.
It's not me, it's someone else.
I'm aware of that, but even after being saved those policies remained. Steve Jobs is the most hilarious hero of the extreme left because his entire life was built on being a greedy capitalist.
To be fair, he took over a "public square" that was about as public and fair as Tiananmen Square. The fine folks running Meta, owner of two other "public squares", are doing the same shit and facing little negativity.
Musk has always been a trigger for you, imho. When he's being discussed your comments read angry or gleeful if something bad happens to him.
I assume ALL billionaires and athletes in GOAT conversations are assholes. They have to be because to get to that level they have to sacrifice everything and everyone in their lives. Just look at any of them and you'll see an asshole standing on bodies of friends, co-workers, family, etc.
That's why shit like Musk's self dealing doesn't phase me in the slightest. First of all, that example specifically I have ZERO issue with as I believe the business world calls that synergy. Secondly, I never fault people for shooting for the stars and failing unless the attempt was horrific. His Twitter rollout has raised eyebrows, but aside from the dumb check plan (which I still wonder if it was intentionally doomed) and firing too many too soon, he's making some good moves and exposing a lot of bullshit that was going on there. I honestly wonder if some of the firings was him or if there was some sabotage going on? Twitter's politics weren't a secret and he doesn't know all the employees personally. He also doesn't have time to meet them all, so he's got to go on the word of managers there. Those folks are the ones who should be taking the heat for the wrong folks being terminated, but we all know how the blame game works...
Side note: Twitter's valuation dropping massively is Wall St assholes making bank. They knew Elon's takeover would be poorly received by certain segments. They also knew some virtue signaling companies would stop their ad campaigns until shit died down and then resume them again. (They will, which is why they just paused their campaigns, but still have accounts on Twitter.) So the stock gets devalued where Wall St folks will buy it in bunches just to watch it climb again. It's the Reddit Gamestop/AMC shit, except this time the Wall St guys are the ones pulling the strings. (All IMHO...)

Seriously?
OK. I do not like him, and yeah, bad things happening to his dumb ass? Sweet!
So I disagree.Leisher wrote: ↑Mon Nov 14, 2022 1:21 pm I assume ALL billionaires and athletes in GOAT conversations are assholes. Synergy would be twitter giving FREE ads to his other companies. Otherwise it's like his Solar acquisition by Tesla, overpaying for a garbage company.
How? There's literally no stock any more. It's private.
