When I finish my contract for the biz school up here, I'm thinking I'll've a large paycheck. I'm further thinking of spending some of it on a new mp3 player before I heard out o' the country.

I'd like if it could :

1) Get local AM/FM radio.
2) Record songs off the radio.
3) Record sounds on the spot
4) Have a shitload of space
5) Have some sort of transmitter (add-on or otherwise) that can broadcast to a frequency on the low end of the FM band so that my radio can pick it up.

Anyone got any favourite brands I should look into?

Edit : Btw, if anyone says I should purchase an iPod or any other Apple product, I will atomic cockpunch you.

An Ipod..... :p

.....or Muvo makes some good mp3s as well as Samsung. You could wait for the Microsoft Zune.

iPod = best hard-drive mp3 player out there, but it has no FM capabilities. I think there are add-ons for everything you ask.

The others are really just medocre, but may have FM stuff.

iRiver will do all but #5 on your list, Malcolm. I've got one and I love it. FM/AM tuner (with alarm function so it can turn itself on to record at a preset time), built-in microphone, mp3 player (of course), and they're well-built and nicely ergonomic. Also, they're better priced than the Apples as well.

iRiver rules.

PS: SanDisk makes similar products and I've heard they're okay. Also, if you watch woot.com for a few weeks they'll probably sell you one for cheap eventually. They keep popping up over there from time to time the last few months.

Iriver makes a great flash player. I highly reccommend them.

I have to admit I now have a video ipod and I love it. Combine it with an HTPC and it will change the way you think of T.V.

Woot.com posts their new stuff at 01:00et and the good stuff like mp3 players routinely sell out before 08:00et.

Yes. It will make me associate T.V. w\ Apple. Thus, I'll think T.V. will suck more & I'll use it less.

Ain't there some generic radio transmitter dealie that'll do that shit relatively painlessly?

Yes, there are lots of them for around $20.

Woot.com is a good site to keep an eye on, but I also reccommend checking out edealinfo.com.

Bought my kid a Zen micro or something like that. Does all but #5 too, I think. The thing it doesn't do however, is survive a trip through the washing machine.

Sure, I had one from radio shack I picked up for about $20. Just plugs into the headphone jack and transmits whatever you've plugged it into.

For better clarity and range, I reccommend getting the $30 or $40 versions. I have a $20 one and it's range sucks. Only gives about 4 choices of station settings.
