I just realized how much the phonetic pronunciation of "pocket PC" is very similar to something else.

I got to try one about 3 years ago. Had the current (for that time) version of Windows CE on it. It was pretty cool cause it was so different from all other phones. But the PC part was clunky and stuff. When I visited dtman on it (cause that's the first thing you do whenever you get a new wacky PC type device), it was barely usable as a web browser. The site opened and everything, but NOTHING was lined up right, etc. Had I not already known the site, it would have been hard to make sense of it. It would open Word/Excel documents, but again, you could only see a small snapshot of the document at any time cause the screen was so small. So, as a PC, it was functional, but not very usable. It was only cool cause you had something very few other people had. Never tried email on it.

Again, that was three years ago. Things might be very different now. But at the time, I opted for a palm based phone instead because that was much more usable to me. Out of about 15 people that tried it, only 2 got it.

The other thing I really didn't like about it was that it only worked as a phone in speaker phone mode. EVERY converstion would have to take place as a speaker phone convo. No privacy, and the speaker phone thing was clunky as well.

It went through batteries VERY quickly as well. It's been the only phone I've ever seen that came with two batteries right out of the box.

So, my impression of one of the first phone/pocket PCs was that it was horrible.

Not sure how much that will help because this was so long ago and things could have drastically changed. But if they haven't, I'd throw a thumbs down on the device.

MD, it depends what you want to use it for and where.

Obviously, the screen will be small and thus, you won't see every bit of any given document, but it's still very functional. It won't be exactly like using your PC, but it works.

Palm is gone. At least the OS. They sold out and are putting the MS OS on their systems now.

I can get email, surf the web, make or receive calls (via speaker, handheld, or headphones), record pictures (1.3 MegaPixel) or video, Word, Excel, give Power Point presentations, open pdf files, open attachments, store contacts, schedule things in my calender, etc.

It syncs directly to my company's network, and email is delivered almost instantly. All my contacts and calender info is stored on the server, so if I enter something into my device, it'll be on my PC immediately without syncing.

The batteries are better than they were as Cake desribed, but not a ton. However, the model I got, the VZW6700 has a new extended battery that's $70. Not only does it last longer, but it's lithium(?) meaning you don't have to wait for it to die to charge it and you won't damage it by charging it whenever you want. (Current batteries for phones and PDAs, etc aren't like that.)

If you have any specific questions, let me know.
